The meeting begins with a bang - the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes, in which the world’s best Flat horse in training, Baaeed, steps up to 10 furlongs for the first time in his career. Precisely 10 years after the mighty Frankel produced arguably the performance of his entire career in this top-class contest.

Racing fans will also get the chance to see Stradivarius, one of the most popular horses in training, when he bids for a fourth success in Friday’s Group 2 Lonsdale Cup.

Saturday’s Sky Bet Ebor Handicap, the focal point of the entire meeting, is worth a massive £500,000 in all. £300,000 goes to the winner - although finding the victor of arguably the most competitive handicap run anywhere all season will not be easy!

It’s four top-class days of thoroughbred action that will be shown live on ITV and punters are in for a treat because the first three days (Wed-Fri) are designated Tote World Pool days, which means punters can bet into the biggest pool on the planet - giving them the chance to win big for just small stakes.

We’ve picked out five horses at York that could just hit the big time for connections and punters alike.

Wednesday - Sky Bet Stayers Handicap (4.10pm)

With rain forecast in Yorkshire on Tuesday and Wednesday, conditions on the Knavesmire might not be as quick as has been the case everywhere else in recent weeks.

Any easing of conditions would be great news for connections of FRANKENSTELLA, who is 10/1 with betting sites, she has a big run in her at a track she operates so well at.

She’s not an easy mare to get a handle on right now given we’ve only seen her once in the 15 months, but there was clear promise in her third at this track in May and connections will surely have had this race in mind for her for a while now.

Frankenstella has only had 12 runs in her career so she’s hardly been over faced and there must still be the potential for her to take her form to a higher level if connections can keep her sound.

She’s a course and distance winner, versatile ground wise and comes here a fresh horse so she looks worth a wager at double-figure odds.

Thursday - Clipper Logistics Handicap (3.00pm)

This is a hot contest but no horse comes into it in hotter form than ORBAAN and the hat-trick seeking seven-year-old could easily provide trainer David O’Meara with a second success in this race.

Orbaan went to the Qatar Goodwood Festival on a two-year losing run but something has really clicked with the son of Invincible Spirit since and, having bolted up in the Golden Mile Handicap, he made light of a an 8lb rise to follow up at last weekend’s Shergar Cup meeting Ascot.

The move he made between the two and the one pole was that of a horse in the form of his life and we know he operates well at this track because he’s a course and distance winner.

Another 4lb rise cranks up the pressure a notch but he is sure to get a strong pace to run at and it would be no surprise if that lethal finishing kick was too hot for the opposition.

Friday - Sky Bet Handicap (1.50pm)

Another northern trainer eyeing a big handicap prize this week is Brian Ellison who heads to York with a cracking chance of landing the £100,000 Sky Bet Handicap with his talented dual-purpose animal CORMIER

It’s already been quite a year for Cormier who won competitive handicap hurdles at Cheltenham and Kelso in March before running perfectly respectably in the County Hurdle at the festival, in which he would likely have finished a touch closer had he not been short of room between the final two hurdles.

Cormier warmed up for this big summer target by bolting up in a Chester handicap last month on his favoured easy ground and he could hardly arrive to York in better shape for this valuable prize.

His best form is all on good ground or slower, so he’ll need the forecast rain to arrive but if it does, he’s surely going to run a big race at a track he’s never lost at.

Friday - Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes (3.35pm)

The fastest horses in training lock horns in this prestigious Group 1 and this year’s renewal has an appealing feel from a punting perspective because of the short-priced Royal Aclaim who is 6/4 with betting apps.

For all his undoubted promise, he is very inexperienced and has yet to even run above Listed level. He is taking a big chunk out of this market and looks well worth taking on.

This is sure to be fast and furious but HIGHFIELD PRINCESS has the speed for a test like this despite doing most of her racing over six and seven furlongs.

The much-improved mare produced one of the biggest performances of her career at this track when she ran away with the Group 2 Clipper Logistics Stakes in May and she comes here on a high after landing the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deaville earlier this month.

If she can hold her position through halfway, then she can see her race out stronger than the out-and-out five furlong horses.

Saturday - Sky Bet City Of York Stakes (3.00pm)

This race tends to go to a horse prominent in the betting - only one of the last 10 winners was sent off bigger than 6/1.

SACRED (nap) proved a fraction disappointing when she was sent off favourite with horse racing betting sites for the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, but she probably shouldn’t be judged too harshly given she was held up in a race where the leaders didn’t really come back.

This talented filly still ran to a high level by getting within a length and three-quarters of winner Sandrine and the switch to a more conventional flat, galloping track will surely see her in a better light.

Her best form is more than good enough to see her home in this and a repeat of her one-length defeat in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes would see her win with something to spare at this level.

She has course form having finished second in the 2020 Lowther Stakes and she represents a stable that is having a brilliant season, so she merits a strong wager this week.
