Brazil's Betting Tax Haul Nears R$8.75bn

Brazil's regulated betting and gaming sector paid R$8.747 billion in federal taxes between January and July 2026, a 76.86% increase on the R$4.946 billion collected over the same period in 2025, according to Receita Federal (Brazil's federal tax authority) data released on August 25, 2026.

July alone brought in R$1.463 billion, up roughly 6% on June's R$1.385 billion, keeping monthly collections above R$1.4 billion since April.

The figures cover federal taxes tied to activity on betting sites and online gaming, including corporate income tax (IRPJ), social contribution on net profit (CSLL), PIS/Cofins, and social security contributions, and include revenue from the state-run Caixa lottery as well as licensed private operators.

Already Close To Beating All Of 2025

Brazil collected R$9.95 billion in betting and gaming taxes throughout 2025.

With R$8.747 billion already banked in the first seven months of 2026, and five months of the fiscal year still to run, the sector is on track to comfortably clear last year's total.

If monthly collections hold at the roughly R$1.4 billion pace seen since April, the full-year 2026 figure could pass R$16 billion.

Rising Tax Rate, Not Just A Bigger Market

Part of the jump reflects a change in the tax rate rather than betting volume alone.

Complementary Law 224/2025, published in the Diário Oficial da União, raised the tax on operators' gross gaming revenue (GGR) from 12% to 13% in 2026, with further increases to 14% in 2027 and 15% in 2028.

Under the law, half of the additional revenue from each increase is earmarked for Brazil's social security system, and the other half for public health initiatives.

Brazil's regulated betting market has been operating under a national licensing regime since January 2025, when the Ministry of Finance's Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA) began authorising operators to run fixed-odds sports betting and online gaming under the country's first federal framework for the activity.

What To Watch Next

The government faces a parallel debate over whether to further tighten the sector.

Proposals in Brazil have floated additional tax increases, restrictions on which game types operators may offer, and tougher advertising rules, all while the tax take from the licensed market continues to climb.

How that plays out will matter for the online casino operators with a stake in Latin America's largest regulated betting market, and for the wider betting sector watching Brazil as a model for newly regulated markets elsewhere.

Receita Federal is due to publish August's figures next month, which will show whether the growth rate held through the winter transfer window and early-season football calendar.
