Coronation Street 65th Anniversary Odds: Shona Favourite To Be 'Sacrificed'

It's an exciting time to be a Coronation Street viewer, with the soap gearing up for its 65th anniversary celebrations and a one-off crossover episode with sister soap Emmerdale.

However, not everyone will be in a celebratory mood as Corrie boss Iain MacLeod has confirmed a much-loved cobbles favourite will perish in upcoming scenes, sparking a brand-new market on betting sites

Ahead of the show's 65th anniversary in December, Iain admitted there will be some "shocking twists", and said one character is guaranteed to be "sacrificed" for the good of the occasion.

The Corrie boss told the Daily Mirror: "The soap gods demand a sacrifice when you have an event of this kind.

"It’s going to be shocking. There will be lots of trauma, lots of drama, lots of twists.

"Sometimes the biggest and best exits are for characters that you care the most about."

Shona's Dramatic End?

Reading between the lines, this unfortunate character is clearly someone viewers cherish.

MacLeod also said: "There’s always that equation where you think, ‘If they were to go, the viewers will really care, but what damage will it do to the landscape of the show in terms of the ability to tell stories?

"It’s a big responsibility so we do agonise about it quite a lot and argue about it. Our story conferences are fiery places at times and this period of the show is no different."

Shona Platt has captured the hearts of the Corrie faithful ever since Julia Goulding first stepped foot on the cobbles.

Julia will celebrate her nine-year anniversary of playing Shona on December 16 - exactly a week after Corrie's 65th birthday - but it could be her last year on the cobbles.

Shona recently revealed she is pregnant, and Julia has warned there are plenty of "twists and turns" to come in this "dramatic" plot.

She told the Mirror: "There's more drama on the way, definitely."

Shona is 13/8 favourite on betting apps to meet her maker in December, while Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) - who took a homeless Shona in during her first Corrie episode - is 5/1 and Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) is a 9/1 outsider.

It's known both actors are leaving the soap, meaning their characters could well be bumped off, but fans seem to think Iain's cryptic comments are about another Weatherfield dweller.

Legends In The Firing Line?

In January, it was reported that iconic trio Bill Roache, Michael Le Vell and Sally Dynevor had all signed new one-year deals to remain on the cobbles.

But with those contracts set to expire in January, could their legendary Corrie characters be in the firing line?

Dynevor's namesake character Sally Metcalfe is the 15/8 second favourite to meet her maker.

Corrie's 65th anniversary will lead up to the show's hotly-anticipated Emmerdale crossover episode, and Sally has a connection, of sorts, to the Dales.

Her husband, Tim Dynevor, was previously part of the Emmerdale writing team, from 1995 to 2016, and if Sally were to perish in December, it would be fitting if she was still involved in the crossover episode.

Elsewhere, if Corrie bosses want a huge reaction from viewers then who better to bump off than Ken Barlow?

Bill Roache is in the Guinness World Records as the longest-serving television star in a continuous role, after portraying cobbles stalwart Ken since the soap's first episode on December 9, 1960.

It would be a monumental storyline if Ken was killed off, and it's 3/1 to happen in December.

Kev Or Abi

It would also be a massive shock if Michael Le Vell was killed off, but his contract might expire around the right time.

His character Kevin Webster is 7/2 to die amid Corrie's 65th anniversary, but his wife, Abi Webster, looks more likely to perish at 2/1.

Lots of Corrie super-fans think Abi will be the one to make way.

"It would be a massive shock if Michael Le Vell was killed off"

She's been playing with fire by having an affair with Kevin's half-brother Carl Webster lately - could things come to a head in a couple of months?

Other Corrie regulars who might be at risk include Carla Connor (Alison King), who is just 4/1

What's more, if Coronation Street producers are going to bump off one of the veteran cobbles characters then the likes of 6/1 shot Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls), 8/1 chance Rita Tanner (Barbara Knox), and Roy Cropper (David Neilson), who is 10/1, could be the unfortunate victim.
