13:30 Chester – Nymphadora – 1pt @ 9/2
Nymphadora didn’t run like she was anywhere near sharp enough to be competitive in a Listed contest at Bath a few weeks ago and will hopefully be fitter this time around. Getting back into handicap company will be a positive anyway, this just her third attempt in one, and when she first ran at this level last term it yielded a C&D second before filling the same position in a big field at Royal Ascot.
She’s only a pound higher now so has no excuses with regard to rating and with decent prize money up for grabs on a track we know suits her, it’s possible that this was her early season target. The ground shouldn’t be a problem and will at least add an extra emphasis on stamina, which will do no harm. Oisin Murphy rides for the first time in a while and I fancy that they’ve got a brilliant chance to win.

14:05 Chester – Lord Uhtred – 1pt @ 6/1
Lord Uhtred is an interesting contender. He has only been out on four occasions, posting three good efforts (including a win on his final start) as a juvenile and looked like one to follow for 2023. His opening start of the season led to a decent effort when you consider that he raced on the wrong part of Newbury’s track from a high draw and he’s better than that performance would suggest.
He kept on well enough despite the disadvantageous racing position and it was his first start for seven months so he’s fully entitled to step forward from it anyway. Chester will hopefully suit, the ground is fine based on how he went through soft last time and the extra half-furlong he gets today is a plus. It’s an open contest with plenty of interesting profiles but he could be as well-handicapped as any of them.
15:45 Chester – Box To Box – 1pt @ 10/1
Box To Box is the one I keep coming back to and he might be a few points too large in the betting. Recent form isn’t on his side as three runs in Bahrain led to him being below-par, but he was progressive in the early part of last year and maybe didn’t travel too well. None of those starts saw him get into his usual prominent racing position and I’m inclined to just ignore them altogether.
Getting handy from stall twelve won’t be simple but two non-runners to his inside is a help and the main forward goer is actually drawn one to his outside. If he gets the position he needs, he’s on a workable mark of 86 and has already won handicaps at this track off 81 & 85. It clearly suits him and if he has been rejuvenated at home in the three months since his last outing, he’ll get involved.
