17:00 Wolverhampton – Munificent – 1pt @ 7/2
Munificent is one of those rare horses who has actually done me a favour before! He’s 2-2 when I’ve backed him, both of those successes coming over C&D and one was in this race last year. A number of defeats followed but two starts ago he posted a career-best to defy 53 and given how hard he pulled throughout, there’s reason to think he’s capable of producing better again.
His last run at Southwell wasn’t too bad, his first go over a straight 5f, and that track wouldn’t play to his strengths. He’ll be happier back around here again and although I’d have preferred a lower stall than nine, he’s going to get buried behind horses for a late run regardless of draw. 7/2 is not a price to blow the mind but if all goes to plan mid-race, he’ll be powering home late on.

17:30 Wolverhampton – Six O’ Hearts – 1pt @ 22/1
Six O’ Hearts has got a highly questionable will to do anything other than the bare minimum but, barring non-runners or changes of tactics, there should be a strong pace on and his ideal scenario might just present itself. First-time cheekpieces are in use as well and they could have a positive effect with regard to how much he’s willing to go through the pain barrier.
Recent form isn’t on his side but his last three spins have been over 5f at Southwell and although I thought he might take to it, he definitely hasn’t. His runs here in the last few months of 2022 offered a lot more encouragement, including a third in November and it wouldn’t take major improvement on that to see him involved. He’s available at 20/1 generally and I’d make him 12/1 at most.
19:00 Wolverhampton – Dream Harder – 1pt @ 11/1
Dream Harder is 3-5 since joining up with Ian Williams and mightn’t be finished with winning yet. He faded at Newcastle last time when third behind a couple of talented rivals who were clearly ahead of their marks but that came just four days after he put in a massive effort – and career-best – when filling the same spot in a valuable 0-80 at Lingfield.
I’m hoping that he simply bounced and that a few weeks off in the meantime can help him return to his previously progressive ways. Switching over to this speedier track will do no harm (2-2 here for the yard) and on his Lingfield performance, I’m certain he’s able to win off 81. This is a tricky, open affair but he’s 11/1 and if you’re each-way inclined, most firms are offering four places.
20:00 Wolverhampton – Carey Street – 1pt @ 9/2
Carey Street was handicapped towards his max for a while, but he shaped with more promise when fourth over the extended 1m 1f here four weeks ago and could build on that off 2lbs lower. Along with being rated to do something, he drops into a Class 6 handicap for the first time since 2021 and on that occasion, he won.
This is the shortest trip he has tackled for a while but he scored over C&D before, doesn’t lack for the pace to cope with it and is also quite tactically versatile, not needing to lead by any means. An optimal position should be up for grabs from stall one and I like the booking of Kieran Shoemark, who comes here for just one ride. With a bit of luck, it could be a worthwhile visit!
