13:30 Ascot – Rhythmic Intent – 1pt @ 14/1
Rhythmic Intent hasn’t stood much racing in the past twelve months, seen on turf twice last April before going missing until returning a couple of weeks ago at Epsom. He wasn’t great on the day, starting off in rear and staying there throughout, but he was given a considerate ride by Richard Kingscote (positioned way too far back in the field regardless) and clearly there were other targets in mind.
Getting a couple of pounds of leniency from the handicapper can help and his second start last year yielded a massive improvement on his first, where he had suffered with a heart issue. Testing ground isn’t a problem to him, which can’t be said about many of the others, and this is a drop in grade to a 0-95. If he’s in form, he could have a class edge over most of these as well and is worth a go at 11/1+.

14:40 Ascot – Darkness – 2pts @ 25/1
Darkness has just about got into this race right at the bottom of the weights and I think he could go a lot better than the current odds are suggesting. To get the main negative out of the way first, he’s 0-10 since joining David O’Meara from France but plenty of those runs were solid and he lined up on top of decent ground most of the time last season, which may not be what he’s ideally wanting.
He got heavy ground (according to Timeform; officially it was soft) on this season’s return at Redcar and ran a cracker to finish second behind The Cookstown Cafu, who scored again since. That was a big effort when you consider the winner had the run of the race at the front and Darkness tried to come from an unfavourable position in the middle of the pack, so I think he’s capable of even better.
Ripon didn’t suit next time, whilst good ground, Newmarket’s track and the pace didn’t see him to best effect last week. There will be no fitness issues at least and he’s into a big field on testing ground again, which should allow Andrea Atzeni to bury him amongst horses, find a rhythm and try to produce him late. If he’s drawn on the right side and gets a clear run, he’ll be a player despite the 25/1 quotes.
