17:30 Newcastle – Iron Sheriff – 1pt @ 18/1

Iron Sheriff is not the most trustworthy of beasts but I think he’s too tempting a price to let run. His last two C&D efforts have yielded a second off 54 and a one-length fourth off 51. He now finds himself operating off 49 and there should come a day when he’s coaxed into popping his head in-front again.

His last run at Southwell was on the flat side, as he never got near the leaders, but plenty went wrong there as he had to race wide off a sedate gallop and had his lane taken in the straight when trying to pick up. It was a considerate ride on what was his first outing for a few months and his previous two goes at the track show he might just not be suited to it.

Getting back here could liven him up, ditto the presumed improved fitness levels, and his rider knows him well, which is always handy in these apprentice events. Cheekpieces being removed is something I’m not too sure on as each of his last twelve runs have seen them in use, but the price is either a play or it’s not and I think there’s enough value in the 16/1+ quotes to take a chance.

18:30 Newcastle – Fivethousandtoone – 1pt @ 5/1

Fivethousandtoone performed with a huge amount of credit at Lingfield ten days ago, running a solid sixth in a Listed race despite having next to no chance at the weights. He was only a length and a half behind runner-up Diligent Harry off level weights and this time he’s going to be in receipt of 12lbs, so the 2/1 vs 5/1 quotes are too wide, for all that the favourite possesses more scope to improve.

The straight track here should suit better and whilst judging novice form over two years later isn’t something I’d do that often, his sole visit here yielded an impressive four-length success. Jason Hart is a booking I like as he has improved his riding massively in the last few seasons and is 2-3 for the yard (the loser was second!). If the horse performs to his best, he should have a major part to play.

19:00 Newcastle – Galton – 1pt @ 16/1

Galton hasn’t had many goes and might have more ability than the betting is suggesting. He has a proud enough head carriage but a couple of his runs since blinkers went on in December offered promise and I’m interested to see him back sprinting. His sole effort over the trip came on handicap debut at Southwell and he did decent late work in a race that has thrown out some winners.

His 7f run here yielded a fourth and the third and fifth horses home have both won since as well. He was below that level last time but I think sprinting might be the best route to get him into the winners’ enclosure and Mark Winn taking over in the saddle to remove a valuable 5lbs is a plus. If there’s a decent pace on, he should finish well and who knows, that may be enough to win. 16/1 is fair.
