13:50 Newmarket – Tagabawa – 2pts @ 10/3
Tagabawa was one of my strong fancies at Royal Ascot and although only sixth at the end of the King George Handicap, it was still a fine effort on his turf debut. The impression he created would suggest that the mile-and-a-half trip stretched him in such a truly run affair. Those who came from further back dominated the front four places and his track position blunted his finishing effort.
I thought he was keen enough as well and dropping to 1m 2f might just be the ticket needed to see him take a big leap forward. The turn of boot he showed when winning off a really slow pace at Kempton suggests that pace won’t be a problem and, provided there are no non-runners, a strong gallop is forecast. His mark of 97 is nowhere near his ceiling and he must be a major player in this.

15:00 Newmarket – Aimeric – 1pt @ 9/2
Aimeric lined up in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot and finished four-lengths behind the winner in eight place. However, as is typical over the C&D, those drawn higher up were at an advantage (first five home drawn 9, 11, 18, 16 & 19) and he came out of the lowest stall of all. You’d think that wouldn’t be a problem as it’s giving you the shortest route around but it’s almost always a big negative.
When they were in the straight, he had to go around one of the weakening prominent racers as the others were finishing off in the outer lanes and was then back onto the rail. It wasn’t optimal and I reckon he did about as well as he could. Stepping up in trip won’t be a problem (so long as the rain isn't too severe) and with more improvement possible on his third outing of the season, 9/2 seems fair to me.
16:45 Newmarket – Under The Twilight – 1pt @ 8/1
Under The Twilight was mainly kept to the All-Weather in her first couple of seasons of racing but got onto turf again three starts ago and has since posted two wins and a close third in a big field handicap. It wasn’t a great race that she won at Salisbury last time out but she could hardly have been any more impressive, always travelling strongly before quickening clear for a five-length success.
The handicapper has had a major say now, her rating shooting up 12lbs to 85. That could put punters off but she strikes me as the type who may still be capable of better in the higher grades and we’ll get to see whether that’s the case today. Rain wouldn’t bother her either and there should be some pace on. It’s tough to be certain given the new mark but I think 15/2+ is worth having a point on.
