14:35 York – Kerdos – 2pts @ 17/2
Kerdos has always been very talented but it’s only on his last couple of outings that he has proven his level to the masses. Following a disappointing run at Newmarket when too keen over 6f, he dropped to the minimum at Chester and caught the eye in finishing a close third from a bad draw. That led to him going to Royal Ascot and he should have won that, throwing the race away by going left late on.
It was all the more frustrating that I had a nice bet on him at 20/1! But hopefully today could be redemption time as the pace he displayed there hints that getting off a stiff track and onto a speedier one could well be in his favour. He’s very fast when things go right early doors and could wind up being Group-class at this trip before long if maintaining his progression for another couple of runs.

16:35 Newmarket – Art Power – 1pt @ 18/1
Art Power has gained all of his Group successes in Ireland, none of them by any less than two-and-a-half lengths, and it’s a while since he was a winner over here. Being 0-10 in Group 1’s makes his 18/1 price-tag look fully justified but from a figures point of view, the best of his efforts do not put him far below the top level and I think the price is offering enough juice to make him a bet this time around.
We can write off his run at Royal Ascot, where he was rather marooned between the two main groups, and instead concentrate on what he did at the Curragh, bolting up in a Group 2 by almost five-lengths. Those in behind wouldn’t knock your socks off and he was entitled to win well once his main market rivals flopped, but the visual was impressive (cruised clear of them all) and the time backed it up.
The main source of my interest is getting to see him on the July course. He took in this race in 2021 and was only beaten a couple of lengths into fourth behind Starman, and that was despite doing his running on the far rail. The rain adds in another factor that could help him more than the others and I just have a suspicion that things could pan out favourably. That could be wrong – we’ll see later!
17:30 York – Roundhay Park – 1pt e/w @ 16/1
Roundhay Park could be worth chancing to grab at least one of the five places on offer. He was a bit below-par when mid-division behind Significantly at Haydock last week but raced in the centre group of three and that may not have been optimal. The winner was back to something near his best as well and the first two home posted efforts that would be well above the normal rate for the 0-85 grade.
The ground would have been fast enough for him as well and if the rain keeps the ground as described at present, it’ll be the first time he has had an ease in a sprint handicap since he bolted up at Catterick in April. He’s only a couple of pounds higher now, Alex Jary is up again to remove his 7lb claim and their chance looks underrated in the betting at present. They’ll need luck in a big field but it may come.
