14:35 York – Gweedore – 1pt @ 20/1

Gweedore dropped his level the last twice but went far too quick at Chester and then took a lead in the Hambleton over a mile here, which led to him being uncomfortable and outstayed. This is a more suitable grade for him to operate in and whilst there are other pace presences lining up, it shouldn’t be as severe if they decide to try to send him onto the front once again, which I hope they do.

His two runs in April were both new career peak efforts, the second of those coming off a two pound higher mark than what he races off today, and a replication of either puts him bang in the mix with all of these. The question is, of course, whether he can get back to that. A lot will depend on the run of the race and whether he has just gone out of form, but the price on offer makes the risk worthwhile.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

15:40 York – Rabaah – 2pts @ 11/1

This race has my head spinning from one horse to the next and any amount of them have bright futures in sprint handicaps, and beyond. Rabaah could end up being the classiest of the lot if he learns to relax a little, something that held him back when jumping from novices into a Listed contest at Newbury four weeks ago. He shaped quite well but couldn’t finish in that grade after over-racing early.

A 7lb rise in the weights for being beaten more than five-lengths isn’t ideal but on raw ability alone, he’s bound to be better than 97 and we may see him peak now in handicap company on the back of a run (which was his first in nearly three-months). The nature of racing at York will suit and as recently as April, Charlie Hills was talking about aiming him towards the Commonwealth Cup! This is easier…

16:50 York – Jewel Maker – 1pt @ 6/1

Jewel Maker is well below the ceiling for 0-85’s but won easily in this grade off 2lbs higher last August and does not lack for class, despite spending the majority of his career with a mark in the 70’s. He looked to be on the way back into top form in the last few weeks, beaten around two-lengths on each occasion and that was despite not getting anything like a clear passage through, especially at Beverley.

Neither race was run to favour those who were waited with so there is every reason to assume that he’s capable of better if they go a true gallop this time and he gets the splits. In receipt of weight from all bar one, I think he has a serious chance of getting off the mark for the year and 6/1 is a fair price. The slight drop in trip won’t be a problem either and he could be the one they all have to beat.

17:25 York – Rathbone – 1pt @ 20/1

Rathbone can race lazily and that leads to some swings in his form. However, two of his four outings since joining up with this yard were solid and he’s 9lbs below his win off 90 last summer. Whether he gets near that level again is questionable but there’s plenty in his favour today with the ground and track being combined with the grade. If he finds his rhythm, he can prove that he’s not a 20/1 shot.
