13:50 York – Thundering – 1pt @ 10/1
This is a really strong handicap but Thundering should have more to offer as a 4-year-old and is worth a bet at double-figured quotes. His seasonal return was poor, no doubting that, but Ripon is sharp enough for his liking, the ground was heavy and he didn’t look to be operating at full tilt. It may have been a run to straighten him up for this and hopefully we will now see what he’s truly capable of.
His form last year was both progressive and strong, whilst his only visit here yielded a strong-staying second behind Farhan in a valuable heritage handicap. Not everything went to plan on that occasion either, with him being set with an ocean to do in coming from right out the back. He had a troubled journey through and to be able to hit the line so hard bodes well. Off the same mark, he must go close.

14:25 York – Spirit Of Light – 1pt @ 33/1
Spirit Of Light will likely be all or nothing here. It was nothing at Newmarket last time when I backed him, the drop to sprinting being something I thought he would enjoy. However, the ground was testing, he got hampered a couple of furlongs from home and James Doyle eased right off. Connections blamed the ground post-race, saying it was too tacky, and he’ll have a nicer surface now.
Before that, he shaped well at Musselburgh then posted a career-best effort when third to subsequent Victoria Cup winner Rebel Territory and the runner-up, Vafortino, was third in the same race so the form backs up the figures (the seventh won well since, too). A strong gallop will aid his cause, York shouldn’t be a problem and if he shows his true worth, he’s far from a 33/1 shot to emerge victorious.
16:10 York – Catch The Paddy – 1pt @ 10/1
Catch The Paddy has plenty of scope to improve physically from 2 to 3 and I’m interested to see how he’ll get on upped to 7f for the first time. He was out of his depth when last seen in the Gimcrack, unable to cope with Group 2 level, but won on his nursery debut the time before and defeated a useful enough sort quite readily. The way he moved was impressive but he also found plenty for pressure.
His breeding – especially on the dam side – would suggest that going up to 7f will be a plus and I think he’ll enjoy it if he settles. He would look to be the stable’s second-string on reputation, Chuzzlewit pitched straight into a Group 2 after finishing fifth on his debut last year, but Neil Callan is on board Catch The Paddy and I prefer him being on Kevin Ryan’s runners. They look underrated at around 10/1.
17:15 York – Vega Sicilia – 1.50pts @ 6/1
Vega Sicilia should be arriving here on the back of a comfortable victory, such was the impression he gave off when cantering into the lead at Salisbury a couple of weeks ago. However, he was in-front around two-furlongs out and then hit the panic button, wobbling around and not doing a tap when asked to quicken away from the pack. In the end, he got collared by one who should never beat him.
There are attitude questions to be answered for sure but if James Doyle can hold onto him and harness his energy for a late thrust inside the final hundred yards, or even later, I have no doubt that he’s still on a really good mark of 84. Not many of these look to have as much raw talent as he does and if all falls into place the way he needs it to, it’s hard to imagine that he won’t be heavily involved late on.
