13:50 Newmarket – Burdett Road – 1pt @ 14/1
Burdett Road seems to be a nice handicapping prospect and can get involved here. He had a few runs with Roger Varian before moving to Michael Bell’s yard and found a mile-and-a-half too far on stable debut at Kempton, racing too freely to get home. He then dropped to Lingfield’s mile and had no problem in getting off the mark, readily defeating two next time out winners under a hand-and-heels ride.
Going onto turf again asks another question but I don’t think the ‘slow, slow, sprint’ nature of All-Weather racing is what he’s after and he shaped fine on his sole turf start when mid-division over 7f here in October. He didn’t have a clue how to race but definitely showed ability and has more to offer for a yard who are going well. 14/1 is fair, for all that this is very competitive with lots of unknown quantities!

14:25 Newmarket – Admiral D – 1pt @ 15/2
Admiral D drew a blank on his debut season for Richard Fahey but ran well on multiple occasions and finished second in a valuable Heritage Handicap on the July course. He was only beaten a couple of lengths in the Ayr Gold Cup as well and it’s clear that he has the potential to land a nice pot this term, especially as he's only a 4-year-old and hasn’t got to race on ground with an ease in it too often.
Both of his juvenile victories in Ireland came on ground described by Timeform as soft and although it’s not going to be too bad today, good-to-soft should be fine for him. He’s down to a mark of 92, which is undoubtedly workable, and has been reported as well-readied for today’s assignment. If all goes to plan and the fitness is there, it’s hard to see how he won’t be involved in the finish.
14:50 Beverley – Sound Reason – 1pt e/w @ 11/1
Sound Reason is drifting to the point where he looks like a very wrong price. He’s not the easiest ride in the world but is quite talented and his 4-16 record isn’t bad for a sprinter. His performances when fresh are fine as well, adding hope that he’ll be ready to rock after 189 days off, and two C&D runs as a 3-year-old yielded a win and a second (off today’s mark) in a race that didn’t pan out to suit.
There should be no pace problems now and he had a wind-op earlier in the year. The time to catch those with breathing tweaks can often be first time up and hopefully all is set for a big run. He’s on his last winning mark, so has got no excuses there, and with five places up for grabs with most of the main firms, he’s a solid each-way selection. With luck, he could beat all of these. 10/1+ is worth a play.
