14:25 Doncaster – Maysong – 1pt e/w @ 25/1

Maysong is only 2-43 in his career to date and that’ll put plenty of people off backing him, but it’s a big field where there will surely be a strong gallop on throughout and when you combine that with the likely very testing conditions, a strange result could occur. Despite his lack of winning, he has finished in second on 13 occasions and performing in a big field is not going to be a problem for him.

His recent campaigning has been interesting, with his last five outings coming at 7f. He can act at that trip when the gallop allows but he stays 1m 2f well on a turning track and I think a mile is his outright optimum. There’s no problem with him going through the ground either and two of his top five turf ratings have been achieved on top of conditions that were officially described as being heavy.

Most of his best efforts have also come with cheekpieces and they’ve been off for all bar one of his last eight runs. The one time they were on, he went within a short-head of winning and hopefully the reapplication will help him to go forward. He has no weight on his back, Thore Hammer Hansen takes over from an apprentice who has never ridden a winner and 25/1 is worth an each-way dart for me.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

14:40 Kempton – My Mate Ted – 1pt @ 6/1

My Mate Ted has shortened already since last night but I wouldn’t be surprised if his true chance of winning is even greater than the current odds suggest. We haven’t got to see him since he disappointed at Newmarket at the backend of the last flat season but that was his third run in little more than a few weeks and it’s entirely possible that he had gone over the top by that point.

Some of his performances beforehand marked him down as one to keep an eye on, especially when he’s back on the All-Weather. He won well over C&D on his first start in this code and wasn’t disgraced in a valuable handicap the time after, suffering a poor trip in a contest where those up top weren’t coming back. If he’s fit enough to go here, he has unfinished business at this track and can get involved.

15:00 Doncaster – Ehraz – 1pt @ 9/1

Ehraz enters into a difficult spell in a sprinter’s career, trying to prove as capable as a 4-year-old as you were at 3. Some of them fall off a cliff but I get the impression that he has not maxed out yet, despite a rating of 105, and he could win a nice race this season. All he had to show for last year’s endeavours was a small-field conditions’ race win at 2/11 but some of his spins in defeat were very good.

He was a short-head second in a Newbury Listed contest in May and followed that up with a solid sixth in the Commonwealth Cup, trading evens in the run after making a big effort alongside Perfect Power. He didn’t get home for whatever reason, perhaps finding the ground a shade fast, but it was a run that marked him down as one to keep an eye on in Group sprints for the remainder of the season.

After that, he had three months off before returning in a late season Group 3 at Ascot and he was drawn out of the equation there, also meeting trouble in the run. I liked how he finished on the good-to-soft ground all the same and today’s surface might play to his strengths more than some of the others. A gelding operation could straighten him out as well and I fancy him to get involved late on.

15:35 Doncaster – Al Mubhir – 1pt @ 5/1

I was hoping to find something at a big price but Al Mubhir is the one I keep coming back to. It’s not hard to make a case for him as he was super impressive in winning his final start of last season, splashing his way through the Haydock mud to score by almost three-lengths off 90. That was just his third go in a handicap, his first over a mile, and the performance was backed up by the clock.

Taking Haydock form too literally is a folly exercise at the best of times but he hammered a decent horse into second and I’d guess that he just improved for experience, alongside racing on properly testing ground for the first time. A 7lb rise doesn’t look harsh and with improvement expected to be forthcoming as a 4-year-old, this may be his big chance to land a valuable prize for his top yard.

17:20 Doncaster – Lunar Jet – 1pt @ 8/1

Lunar Jet has regressed a lot from the peak he achieved when trained by John Mackie but now runs off 19lbs lower than when last successful and lines up in a 0-70 for the first time ever. That won’t mean a lot if he’s on bad terms with himself, as his recent hurdling exploits would suggest, but he will appreciate returning to the flat and his last two wins have come on ground rated heavy by Timeform.

He had an excuse for his Ludlow performance (bled) and that track would be plenty sharp enough for him anyway. Doncaster is suitable and the yard have only had a few runners on the All-Weather so far this year, but one of them has won twice and one of the others has been second twice (and won in December). Hopefully this fellow will prove to be in good form as well by running a big race.
