12:20 Newcastle – Aleezdancer – 1pt @ 14/1

Aleezdancer owes me nothing this season anyway, as I’ve backed him once and he won! He landed a nice touch on that occasion, backed in from 10/1 into 9/2 fav, and took his record on soft or heavy ground to 1-1-1-1. When the hoof is sinking into the turf, he’s super smart but he hasn’t got his optimal conditions all that often and that’s stopping him from really maxing out towards a higher level.

It was good-to-soft for his next start at Newmarket but I didn’t think he moved like one who was enjoying the track, then last time at York it was definitely firm if you go by the clock. He was given a more patient ride than usual and could only muster a tenth placed finish in the end, but that doesn’t tell the whole story as he was locked up with nowhere to go whilst the race was developing.

That was a solid effort suggesting he can still do better yet and having six weeks off to freshen up at home could help matters. His one run on the All-Weather wasn’t without hope either, coming over 7f here and he is too quick to be fully effective at that trip. We’ll get to see what he can do in a sprint and I find it hard to understand why he’s the outsider of the field. 14/1 is definitely generous on form.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

14:05 Newcastle – Aztec Empire – 1pt e/w @ 33/1

With six places up for grabs from plenty of firms, Aztec Empire may be worth taking a punt on to revisit the promise he showed when winning well at Kempton back in February. That was a really good effort from a horse having just his second start in a handicap and I liked how he moved before quickening clear of Withhold. It was quite an impressive timefigure to boot and he looked to be one to follow.

Things have most certainly not gone to plan since! Two runs have yielded two below-par efforts, the first over Kempton’s two-mile course again in a smaller field where he ended up over-racing off a slow tempo and weakened into last place. Then he went to Newbury a few weeks later on heavy ground and patently hated the surface, hitting the wall dramatically after travelling fine into the straight.

It’s entirely possible he has lost his way for some reason but Andrew Balding has kept him off the track for ten weeks since (missed one engagement due to the ground and was balloted out of Ascot) and hopefully they’ve figured out a way to get him back to his peak. On the All-Weather again in a big field, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a revival. If it happens, he’s rated to do something better off 89.

14:40 Newcastle – Wobwobwob – 1pt @ 5/1

Adrian Keatley’s horses are flying of late, 6-14 in the past two weeks, and Wobwobwob could be a live contender to enhance that record. I’m not 100% certain about the pace makeup of this race, with a fear that he could be put into the speed earlier than would be ideal, but despite being on the exposed side of things, I’m convinced that there’s another race or two in him from marks in the high 80’s.

I backed him at Chester when he was last seen in the middle of May and there were major pace problems that day, as he went to the front and got hassled throughout by Gweedore. The pair overdid it massively, as shown by Revich and Witch Hunter coming through to finish first and second. It wasn’t a terrible run but based on the gallop set, it wouldn’t be one to judge him negatively on anyway.

His previous efforts at Redcar and Leicester were very good, neither being too far off his peak figures, and a minor step up on those put him bang in the mix against this field. Tom Marquand being booked catches they eye also (rarely used by the yard; has been on this fellow three times before) and though not proven on the All-Weather, some of his siblings won on it. I think he could repeat the trick.
