15:20 Ripon – Golden Melody – 1pt @ 13/2
Golden Melody has a record of 0-21 in handicaps when rated 72 or higher but she’s 4-14 from 71 or lower, three of those wins coming off 69, 70 & 71. The handicapper is giving her a chance now in dropping her to her last winning mark (70) and that being combined with peak race-fitness after three runs should see her in the mix at this 0-70 level – she contested a 0-90 at Nottingham last time.
There was strong market support for her on that latest outing, being backed from 8/1 into 9/2 before the off, but it was a good race and she lacked the class of the others. This is much more her level and whilst her peak efforts have come over a shorter trip, Ripon is speedy enough that I think 1m 2f on quicker ground won’t be a problem. 13/2 is worth a go and if she relaxes into a nice rhythm, she’ll go well.

16:20 Ripon – Imperial Sands – 1pt @ 12/1
Imperial Sands might be the value play in this. Granted, his All-Weather form is massively superior to anything he has done on turf to date, but it’s reflected in his mark as he’s 12lbs lower in this code. He hasn’t had an excess of attempts on it either – just four goes in handicaps – and wasn’t disgraced after going quickly in-front in a relatively valuable race over York’s mile two weeks ago.
The hope today is that he might be able to go a more suitable gallop over this longer trip and his best turf effort by a long way came at 1m 2f around this time last year when second to Bad Company at Newmarket. He’s 3lbs lower now following some leniency from the handicapper and with Ripon being a track that should suit his style, I wouldn’t be surprised to see an improved showing despite the price.
