17:00 Newcastle – Jubilee Girl – 1pt @ 3/1

Jubilee Girl remains unexposed and should have more to offer over middle distances, if not a bit further in time. She seemed to need her reappearance run here (1m 2f) last month, which was also her handicap debut, but stepped forward to score by a short-head at Southwell (over 1m 3f) a week later.

She tackled this C&D on her sole outing since and ran a cracker to finish second, a length behind Buxted Too. That rival lines up here but has won again since so there’s a 5lb swing at the weights which will hopefully give Karl Burke’s charge the edge for this rematch. I think she has progression to come at this trip and wouldn’t be surprised if they make more use of her by going into the lead. 3/1 to reverse the form with the favourite and beat the other four looks fair enough to me.

18:00 Newcastle – Melody King – 1pt @ 15/2

Melody King goes without his usual hood again and that may indicate he’s expected to need another run to reach his peak. It was left off for his recent return from three-months off when he ran over C&D and after showing bright pace, he weakened through the field to finish six-lengths behind in seventh.

Along with needing the spin, he went too quick and that was a 0-85. This represents a major drop in grade to a 0-70 and although it is competitive, there’s far more chance of him sustaining his gallop against this level of opposition. He’s rated right in between the mark of his last two successes (both in 0-75’s) and if he has stepped forward from a fitness point of view, and relaxes a bit better early on, he should be in the mix for a lot longer.

19:00 Newcastle – Otto Oyl – 1pt @ 10/3

Otto Oyl has a split mark, deemed almost a stone inferior on the All-Weather compared to turf – which is fair enough given what he has, or hasn’t, achieved on the artificial surfaces in six runs since October – and hopefully he can take advantage of being eligible to drop into a 0-50 classified stakes for the first time.

He looked a hard ride at Wolverhampton last time but in fairness to the horse, that was a contest for amateur jockeys and he’ll have the assistance of Oisin Murphy today. The pace of that race, which he forced throughout, was hard and it was also his first run for a couple of months. With a more energy-saving approach and improved fitness, we could see his true worth and it’s not that long (June) since he won a turf handicap off 61. At his best, he's better than this grade.
