15:00 Newbury – Exoplanet – 2pts @ 11/2
Exoplanet has Group-class potential and he’ll be hard to beat in this. He raced twice as a juvenile, impressing with the way he went through his debut to score over 7f here and then stepped up to a mile in a Listed contest at Newmarket. He wasn’t ready for that experience given how he performed, finishing last of the six runners after missing the break and not looking in love with the track.
Roger Varian put him away after and he was due to return at Nottingham last month only to be pulled out thanks to heavy ground. They ended up running him over C&D a couple of weeks ago on a surface that was as bad and I’m semi-surprised that he ran so well, finishing a four-length second to Military Order. The Godolphin runner has since landed a Derby trial at Lingfield and looks very smart.
Chesspiece, who only loomed in on Exoplanet as he got tired, landed a good handicap at York two days ago from a mark of 96. There’s clearly nothing wrong with the form, he is going to be better on a nicer surface, makes his handicap debut off a workable-looking 97 and has further progression to come solely from the experiences. If he shows. the level I think he’s capable of, he’ll go close.

16:10 Newbury – Atrium – 1pt @ 6/1
Atrium is very talented on his day and could land a nice prize here. He was bogged down on horrible ground in the Lincoln, so it’s easy to strike a line through that, and then didn’t appreciate the run of the race when behind Jimi Hendrix over C&D last time. They went slow early, quickened in the middle part and then finished fairly fast. He needs the opening tempo to be harder and slowing down late on.
It’s possible that it could pan out better for him in this and he’s drawn in the middle of the pack so will find it easier to end up on the right part of the course, which didn’t happen most recently either as he was away from where the main action developed. The better ground is a help and Ryan Moore being up for the first time is another obvious plus. 6/1 isn’t exactly huge but he has got major claims.
17:18 Newbury – Treacherous – 1pt @ 33/1
I could be barking up the wrong tree with Treacherous as some of those at the head of the market have got a major class edge over him. On the other side of the coin, it is a handicap and he’s operating at a lowly rating of 75. That’s 3lbs higher than when he finished well to gain his first win in a long time at Wolverhampton in December but 11lbs lower than his peak success back in 2020.
He seemed to be on quite good terms with himself at Doncaster when returning from a five-month break a couple of weeks ago, shaping as if he’d improve for it. That was only the second time he had lined up on such testing ground as well and today’s conditions will be far more favourable. If they go hard early and there’s a pace collapse, it’s not impossible that he’ll be coming home strongly.
