13:35 Newcastle – Astrobrio – 1pt @ 14/1
Astrobrio is 0-8 on the level but only one of those starts was since she moved to Mark Walford’s yard. Most of her form has come over shorter trips than this and I thought she showed enough at 1m 2f here last time to suggest that she can do better in the near future when stepped up in distance.
That came in a race for amateur riders, in which she was sent off at 150/1, and she never had a chance of getting competitive under weak handling. Despite that, she posted the second fasted closing quarter-mile and may be in better order than the bare form would be suggesting.
Going up in trip didn’t work out when she was trained by Harry Eustace but a couple of hints suggest the mile-and-a-half could be what she’s after and any of the double-figured quotes on offer are worth having a small go at. The handicapper has relented and hopefully it’s enough to see her getting heavily involved late on.

15:20 Newcastle – Khabib – 1pt @ 10/1
Khabib is best at Southwell but scored twice over C&D as he was progressing early last year and looks overpriced to win this. Granted his last run was poor, but he’s not able to perform to his true level over a sixth furlong and getting back to the minimum trip will give him a much better chance.
Before that flop, he was in excellent form, running Bedford Flyer to a neck before finishing a length off Alligator Alley (won again since; as did the fourth and fifth). If he’s able to bring that form to the table, there’s no doubt that he can be mixing it with all of today’s opposition and freshening him up with seven weeks off the track could be another positive. He’s likely to be readied for this given the prize money on offer and I think he’s more of a 6/1 poke if he’s back to his best.
19:30 Kempton – Imperium – 1pt @ 4/1
Imperium boasts a fine record at this track having won five times (four over C&D). I thought he had a good chance to win away from here when he raced at Wolverhampton last month but – like the majority of my bets in recent months – he was disappointing and couldn’t land a meaningful blow.
It could be worth forgiving him, however, as it was run at a stop-start gallop on a course he had no experience of and he raced too keenly for his own good. Getting back to this venue is the obvious plus-point for today and the handicapper is giving him a chance by dropping him to 91. That’s a couple of pounds below his success last January and that came in first-time cheekpieces. Blinkers are in use for the first time now and if they coax him into form again, he’ll go close.
