13:50 Epsom – Harb – 1pt @ 9/1
Harb returns from almost a few months off the track so it’s hard to know exactly how tuned he’ll be for this. However, he had a fine second half of 2022 after joining Peter Crate’s yard, winning a couple of handicaps and running a few more solid races. Both efforts so far this year were good also, not beaten far by Miss Nay Never and Blind Beggar at Chelmsford; two horses clearly ahead of their marks.
He’s only 0-6 on turf but is a better performer nowadays and the last time he went on it, he finished a good third at Sandown on very testing, heavy ground. That track may have been a shade on the stiff side for him and I’m really interested to see how he’ll do on a rapid, downhill course. It should suit, the ground will be testing and a talented apprentice claims 5lbs. 9/1 is a few points on the large side.

15:00 Epsom – Lord Protector – 1pt @ 3/1
Lord Protector has already shortened this morning but his price is justified in my book. He was very promising in the early part of his career, winning his first three starts. Only one success has come his way from seven more outings but that was a good handicap in which a few subsequent winners were behind him. The runner-up, 83 rated at the time, has since improved to a mark of 95.
Ralph Beckett’s charge is 5lbs higher now but his peak timefigures have been achieved on top of ground with an ease and he could end up enjoying these conditions more than most of the opposition, hence why I think the support for him has been so strong. He has had a wind-op since last seen and with this being a nice prize, I’d imagine he’ll be primed to be at his best. Hopefully he’ll be hard to beat.
15:35 Epsom – Tashi – 1pt @ 16/1
Tashi is on the quirky side and doesn’t like the stalls, often very slow to get going. That has helped to yield a career record of 1-21 but she has since moved from Sheila Lavery’s yard to Tom Ward having been sold for 30,000gns over the winter and it’s not impossible that a change of scenery and training routine could help to lessen those issues. If it does, she’s handicapped to do something off 9lbs below her peak.
How she’ll handle Epsom is an unknown but the ground shouldn’t be a problem and although this is a competitive contest, she hasn’t had an excessive amount of attempts in handicaps with her previous connections chasing black type regularly. Tom Ward will have to work his magic with regard to her stalls behaviour but the price makes the risk worthwhile and if she runs to her best, she can go well.
