16:40 Lingfield – Triggered – 1pt @ 5/1
Triggered is a cliff horse to many, including myself, and I was edging towards leaving him alone after he was defeated over C&D a couple of weeks ago. He wasn’t disgraced by any means, beaten less than a couple of lengths, but it was still a bit underwhelming. On the other hand, I did have some pace doubts beforehand and they did materialise, as the finishing speed of the race (over 107%) shows.
He had performed to a surprisingly good level over a mile the time before (second to one who almost scored again afterwards), something I didn’t expect given most of his 48-race career has been as a sprinter. 7f might be the key to unlock the door and Billy Loughnane is back on board removing his super valuable 5lbs. If the pace scenario is better this time around, we’ll get to see his true worth.

19:30 Wolverhampton – Good Earth – 1pt @ 16/1
Good Earth is a risky selection as he’s returning from a 178 day break and could be using this as a prep for something on the turf. However, he has won and gone close after similar layoffs and Michael Herrington’s yard have been motoring along well in 2023 thus far, operating at a 20% strike-rate. This is a more valuable race than is usual for the grade as well and could be worth having him ready for.
He was really progressive last year, improving from a mark of 67 to a peak of 87, and went within a length of winning the Great St Wilfred at Ripon off today’s rating. I like the way he can travel through a race, he finds for pressure as well, and he has no issue acting on speed tracks. There should be a good gallop on here, he’s nicely drawn and if he’s fit enough, any double-figured price is big.
20:00 Wolverhampton – Jackmeister Rudi – 1pt @ 11/2
Katie Scott and Jason Hart are a formidable duo when they link up, 67 runners yielding 13 winners for a 19% strike-rate. Only four seconds are on their record and when they have a live runner, it usually wins. Jackmeister Rudi has shortened a lot since the overnight fantasy prices but I still think he’s a worthy play at 5/1+ following some more encouraging hints when behind Glorious Charmer last time.
He could never land a blow there but was only beaten four-lengths in a race that didn’t exactly pan out to suit, and hopefully this time he will settle better and be positioned somewhere near the pace. He was far too lit up in amongst horses but had an apprentice on board and will benefit from stronger handling this time. His rating is workable, the draw is fine and he should be nearing peak fitness too.
