16:00 Haydock – Dandy Dinmont – 1pt @ 8/1

The betting looks close to spot-on for this race but Dandy Dinmont could be the one who offers some value. On his day, he’s a strong-travelling type who can hit the line well and his form so far this year would suggest he’s better than ever. Granted, he’s yet to win but was second twice (including in a 0-95; split two 90+ horses), third once and then finished fourth at Beverley last month.

He ended up beaten a few lengths in that but made his effort against the rail and that was likely the slowest part of the track. Those who were away from it finished best and I’m inclined to think that he’s still in good form. A quicker surface does pose another question as he mightn’t want it too fast, but that’s factored into the price and if he’s able to run up to his best, he’s a threat to all of these.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

16:10 Catterick – John Kirkup – 1pt @ 9/1

John Kirkup is on a losing run of 17 but came good around this time last year and shaped with some promise over C&D ten days ago, only beaten a couple of lengths into seventh. He ended up locked on the inside of horses and whilst he wasn’t exactly climbing all over them to try and get through, he had been keen early doors. It’s possible he could take a step forward for that and do better now.

The handicapper is giving him every chance, another 3lb drop at the weights coming his way, and he’s now over a stone below his last winning mark. Given the handicapper’s leniency, even just a few pounds of improvement on what he did most recently puts him bang in the picture and I hope he’s a live contender in a wide-open 0-70. I wouldn’t have him any bigger than 5-6/1 so he’s a fair play at 9’s.

20:12 Sandown – Yaanaas – 1pt @ 3/1

Yaanaas was unraced at both two and three but has quickly made up for lost time, winning his first couple of starts on the All-Weather in March and April. He was allotted a mark of 92 for those and hopped straight into a quality handicap at Ascot, running a brilliant race to finish second, only caught in the closing stages by a more patiently ridden rival who challenged away from him.

I thought the way Yaanaas travelled through the race was encouraging, despite the finishing effort not being quite what it had promised to be, and that experience of a first handicap run won’t be lost on him. He’s only a pound higher here and Jim Crowley takes over from an apprentice, which is a definite plus. Another minor step forward will see him prove tough to beat before he heads back to Ascot.
