13:50 Catterick – Blackcurrent – 1pt @ 17/2
Blackcurrent is quite an amazing horse as he has never been rated higher than 54, yet he’s an eight-time winner. Like many of Alan Brown’s runners, he’s in very good order this year and although unquestionably better on the All-Weather than he is on turf, he has got a split mark. He’ll be lining up here from a pound out of the handicap but did win a handicap in this code off 1lb higher last May.
I thought he ran a good race last time over 6f, not helped by being hassled in the lead by the eventual winner, and the minimum trip probably suits better more often than not. There’s pace pressure in this as well but hopefully he’ll be able to lead them and won’t get headed! Ryan Sexton is one of the best riders, so his presence is a plus, and if all goes to plan, they should be bang in the mix at a generous looking 17/2.

15:25 Catterick – Poster Child – 1pt @ 12/1
Poster Child was one of my last time out selections when she made her seasonal return at Thirsk, a track she went well at last season. The betting suggested it wasn’t going to be her day as I had backed her at 4/1 in the morning and her BSP was almost 14/1! It’s clear the fitness wasn’t in place as after travelling along reasonably well (traded 3/1 in-running), she was running on fumes late on.
She didn’t seem to have a major issue going fresh in the past, hence why I took the chance last time, but what was done on the track makes me think we’ll see her true abilities now. She’s on the same mark as her Thirsk second on her second start of 2022 and Kevin Frost’s yard seem to be in a good place at the moment, with three winners and three places from 16 runners in the past couple of weeks.
16:30 Catterick – Chookie Dunedin – 1pt @ 8/1
Chookie Dunedin wins more often on the All-Weather and hasn’t been at his absolute best for a while now, but he’s receiving a lot of leniency from the handicapper and is now rated 64. That’s below all twelve of his handicap wins and 8lb below last May’s turf win, which was gained very, very easily on soft ground at Ayr. It’s safe to say that if he was in that sort of form, he’d be winning this easily!
He's an 8-year-old now so whether he’s able to get back to that level is a question, but he wasn’t beaten far off 67 at Wolverhampton three starts ago and he didn’t enjoy the slowly run nature of the race he contested last time. There’ll be no pace problems this time around and his draw in three should yield a good racing position. If he shows his true worth, he’ll be competitive in this.
