17:30 Wolverhampton – Society Red – 1pt @ 12/1

Punting in amateur riders races is not my thing but this is the best race on the card and an interesting betting heat. The one my pin has landed on is Richard Fahey’s Society Red and he looks overpriced at any double-figured quotes, for all that we know if he runs like he did last time, he’ll be hammered.

He barely raised a gallop up Newcastle’s straight but whilst he has won two four-runner races at that track, his other efforts have been very poor as well. Most of his wins in recent seasons have been on turning, speedier tracks and last February he scored over C&D off 6lbs higher. 

It’s with good reason that his mark has come down since but he shaped well here three outings ago (in November) when held up from a bad draw and if he has been coaxed back to similar form, he will be a major player. His draw is good and his rider has a decent strike-rate. He’s worth a small bet.

19:30 Wolverhampton – Starjik – 1pt @ 11/1

Starjik was heavily supported on his first 5f attempt when running over C&D two weeks ago but lost all chance at the gate, rearing as they jumped off. It ensured he had no chance of getting into his usual handy position and, as it turned out, those who were at the head of affairs had a definite advantage.

He got a quiet ride afterwards but still ran on well enough without too much persuasion and shaped better than he had done on his previous five starts since joining this yard. Gate issues are not obvious with him either, so hopefully it will prove to be a one off and we’ll see better this time around.

The handicapper hammered him when he won a couple of races with John Butler in October and November, but they're relenting now and the horse is back down to his last winning mark of 55. He’s eligible to race in weaker races than this but the price is more than fair if he gets away on terms and I'm happy to take a chance.
