18:00 Yarmouth – Dark Trooper – 1pt @ 11/1
Dark Trooper has been a non-runner as a result of soft ground before but there is plenty of form in the family to suggest that it could be a positive for him and I hope connections will take a chance. We haven’t got to see the best of him yet and both of his wins earlier in the year were gained in very slowly-run All-Weather contests in which he had to dig fairly deep in order to emerge victorious.
He had a break on the back of being turned over at odds-on around Wolverhampton (stayed on the rail; not the place to be) and after needing his return, he shaped much better at Newmarket last time. He was unable to see that race out against a winner who looked well ahead of his mark and I think it’ll be interesting to see how he’ll cope with the drop back to sprinting for the first time in a handicap.
It’s something that could well suit him and, more importantly, he’s likely to get a consistent tempo to sit behind. Yarmouth is one of the turf tracks that seems to suit those who enjoy the artificial surfaces, so that’s another potentially favourable angle, and trainer Ed Walker has a fine record here. Whether the horse is up to defying 83 on the turf is on the debatable side but he might be, and the price is fine.

19:30 Yarmouth – Stone Circle – 1pt @ 10/1
Stone Circle doesn’t have as much raw talent as some of these and with 43 outings under his belt, he’s hardly unexposed either. On the other hand, the ground is going to be testing and he hasn’t faced cut all that often in his career. He’s 2-4 when it’s officially soft and won first time up for the season over C&D in April. That came on ground Timeform rated as heavy and he went through it really well.
His recent efforts at Salisbury and Haydock – both on a fast surface – would suggest he’s bang in-form, as he was only beaten less than a length on both occasions. If the return to a testing surface, and this track (2-3 over C&D), can eke out a few pounds, he’s rated to get involved should the ground blunt some of the others. He has drifted out to 10/1 and I think that’s worth our while to take a chance on.
