13:35 York – Eldrickjones – 1pt @ 14/1

Roger Fell operates at around a 9% strike-rate but it doubles when Danny Tudhope is booked (16-90) and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Eldrickjones enhance that record. He was forward as a juvenile and finished second in the Coventry, then failed to find any improvement for his experience on the track and subsequently ended up being too highly rated to achieve anything as a 3-year-old.

The handicapper has relented now and he’s 23lbs below his peak rating, so surely it won’t take too long for him to find his way again. There were hints of a revival on this season’s return when mid-division at Newcastle in a race that wasn’t run anywhere near to suit and he’ll be much fitter now. Getting onto turf again is a plus, his draw is fine and he’ll get a solid pace to sit off. He must go well.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

14:40 York – Alligator Alley – 1pt @ 16/1

I love Korker and he’ll be hard to beat if all goes to plan for him, but price is everything and he’s a much lesser bet at the current odds compared to what he was last week from a 3lb lower mark. Another who needs things to fall right is Alligator Alley and I’d prefer to gamble on him at 16/1, with his performance behind Korker being one that could be built upon if those up top are coming back.

They weren’t last week when he finished in sixth, beaten four-lengths, and I thought he did fine in the circumstances. It wasn’t mind-blowing by any means and not as eye-catching as today’s favourite, but he had more in him than he was able to show and it was his first go on turf for a while following an All-Weather campaign. This could be his chance to peak and they might go a step quicker this time.

15:30 Haydock – Royal Aclaim – 1pt @ 11/2*

Royal Aclaim is a super talent with more to offer and I’m hopeful she can grab her first Group race success here. She looked to be a nice prospect early doors, winning her sole juvenile start at Newcastle and reappeared in a novice at Bath last June, scoring easily. It was her next outing in a Listed contest at York where she really stamped her class, however, bolting up under a hands-and-heels ride.

Her undefeated record came to an end in the Nunthorpe, for which she went off as the favourite, but the draw was of no use to her there and it’s easy to understand why she couldn’t do better. The ground was too soft in France on her final start, where she ran well enough in third, and she’ll be happier on today’s surface. Haydock’s track will be fine and if she performs up to her best level, she’s a big player.

15:50 York – Verdansk – 1pt @ 11/2

Verdansk had some good form in a trio of novices at Newbury last season and I thought he shaped well on his handicap debut three weeks ago. Heavy ground on his first attempt away from a flat track seemed to catch him out and it’s also possible that he needed what was his first spin for 197 days. Regardless, things look to be set up for an improved performance today with that under the belt.

The ground will be faster, the track is flatter and I don’t think there’s anything in opposition up to the level of Yacowlef and Striking Star, the two who beat him last time. The second mentioned has since gone on to run second again in a good handicap off 5lbs higher and Verdansk’s rating couldn’t be touched due to him weakening late on. He shouldn’t be repeating that trick around here, I hope!

16:45 Haydock – Alexander James – 1pt @ 14/1*

Alexander James hasn’t achieved much on turf since joining Mick Appleby, both of his wins for the yard coming on the All-Weather, but he has got a split mark now and could eventually find a race. Back in this code at Leicester four weeks ago, he was 25/1 and ran like he should have been ten times that price. However, the ground was horrible and for all that he handles cut, that was too deep.

I’m not totally certain about quicker ground for him, especially at 7f, but he did win on good in France and hopefully the watering will have taken the sting out of it. A tongue-tie is added to his cheekpieces, which could help given that he has had a wind-op before, and his best turf effort for Appleby came at this track (over a mile on good-to-soft). He’s a risky play, no doubt, but he’s worth a go at 14/1.
