17:00 Southwell – Youllovemewheniwin – 1pt @ 16/1

Youllovemewheniwin doesn’t find winning all that easy (2-34 overall) but he’s at a level where he should be capable of being fully competitive and with a strong pace likely, it’s worth having a few quid on him to pick up the pieces late in the day.

He was a bit disappointing at Lingfield last time but that came over 6f and his two peak performances since joining up with Geoffrey Deacon’s yard have been over the minimum. The best of them came in November in a C&D handicap when two-lengths behind Primo and that is the sole time he has had the chance to run at Southwell, so coming back here looks to be a positive as well.

It’s clear he’s not the force of old (mark peaked at 68) but there’s no doubting he can run well in these classified races and he went close enough at Lingfield on his penultimate start, beaten just a half-length. A few pounds of improvement is needed to land this but taking a lead and returning to this track might do the trick. Whatever happens, he’s a generous price around the 16/1 mark.

19:00 Southwell – Alexander James – 1pt @ 4/1

Alexander James looks like a solid proposition and should go close. He found 7f in a hotter race too demanding on his speed when close up in fourth behind Lord Of The Lodge last month but still shaped with enough promise to think a sixth career success was edging ever closer.

His C&D second to Tropez Power in December was a really good effort as well and there’s a 5lb swing at the weights for just a half-length. Oisin Murphy, who has a 23% strike-rate when booked for the Appleby team, rides for the first time and if he can get the horse to relax better than has been the case on some of his recent outings, I have no doubt that the pair will be bang in the mix. The price is hardly mind-blowing but he’s the clear favourite to win this in my book.

20:00 Southwell – Tricky Business – 1pt @ 14/1

Tricky Business could flop or run a cracker, hopefully the latter! In three runs since the turn of the year, there has been some signs of life and as the handicapper relents more, the closer he should be getting to doing something meaningful. He’s down to a mark of 54 now, 21lbs below the rating he was allotted for winning his maiden back in 2021, and looked of late as if he could take advantage.

Last time he was mid-division over 7f at Wolverhampton but that came in first-time blinkers and he did too much, too soon. He was still only a few lengths off the winner and now cheekpieces are in use, which shouldn’t light him up as much early doors and may help him in the finish.

He’s also back at 6f and his third to Jems Bond at Newcastle last month came over this trip. A solo on the front end isn’t impossible based on the run styles of many others and whilst it’s tough to know what to expect from one falling down the weights, enough signs are in place to think quotes of 12/1+ are fair. A minor improvement on his recent best efforts put him in the picture.
