14:40 York – Music Society – 1pt @ 12/1
David Allan not being on board Music Society is a bit off-putting but it could be for weight reasons, as 8-9 would be near his limit. I’m going to take a punt that the jockey bookings aren’t of much significance – for all that I can see Hyperfocus running a big race also – and hope that this fellow can come up trumps in a race where he was narrowly denied two years ago after trading 1.04 in-running!
He certainly is in the form needed to run a big race, coming here on the back of multiple good efforts, and was only beaten a half-length into second in the Ayr Gold Cup trial a couple of weeks ago. His mark has been left unchanged, he was ahead of today’s favourite Aberama Gold there and will enjoy an end-to-end test at this track as much as he enjoyed that one. He must be a big player.

15:00 Ascot – Spirit Of Light – 1pt e/w @ 28/1
I know the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, but I’m very ignorant when it comes to some handicappers! Spirit Of Light is one of those and he will get the nod for the fifth time in a row. Only once in the previous four attempts have I felt justified in selecting him post-race, and hopefully he might consent to making that a second.
The best of those runs came on fast ground in a York sprint, in which he could have gone closer to winning with luck mid-race. His two outings since came at Royal Ascot and on both occasions, he was done by the draw. In the Buckingham Palace, he raced in the smaller group on the near side and then in the Wokingham, he came out of stall one and you needed to be middle-to-high on that day.
As such, I’m happy enough to ignore them and hope that this time he could end up being favoured from a central draw! It’s hard to know how it’ll pan out, but some of the pace isn’t all that far away from him and hopefully he’ll be tracking the right horses for a change. If he is, he’s definitely better than a mark of 98, the ground won’t be a problem and taking the cheekpieces off may be a help also.
17:25 Ascot – Kimngrace – 1pt @ 22/1
Kimngrace could be the forgotten horse in here. We have to trust that her fitness won’t be an issue following a few months away from the track but Richard Hughes has got his team in good order and she defied a longer break to score on this season’s return at Lingfield in February. That yielded a career-best performance in a Listed contest and it’s clear that she can be readied at home.
Things did not go to plan on her three outings afterwards but she did have some excuses at Bath when stumbling early doors (not given a hard race) and then got isolated from the main group at Newmarket over 6f. Returning to the minimum trip is a plus, she’s in a handicap for the first time this season and should get a strong pace to sit off. With luck in-running, she can do better than the market expects.
