15:15 Lingfield – Mickey Mongoose – 1pt @ 7/2
Mickey Mongoose is not one of the leading lights in the Johnston yard but could be a different proposition in a handicap for the first time. A few of his five runs have been very poor but two of his All-Weather runs were solid in the context of who he was racing against. One of them was a fourth to Animate and the other a third to Lieber Power, both of whom would be mid-80’s level performers.
Those good runs came over 7f and his effort over a mile when last seen wasn’t so hot, but breeding would suggest this trip should be a help more so than a hindrance and I can’t see it being a problem, especially on a speed track. His wind has been tweaked, he’s likely to improve for another winter under his belt and he has been gelded too. There are lots of reasons to hope for better and 7/2 is fair.

16:45 Lingfield – Covert Mission – 1pt @ 3/1
Covert Mission is probably as high in the weights as he’d want to be but his trainer seems to have found a perfect opportunity for him. None of the opposition look overly well-treated but there’s a lack of pace on and that could lead to Benoit De La Sayette getting a solo on the front end, increasing his chance of winning and in turn making life more difficult for the current favourite, Hul Ah Bah Loo.
Recent outings for Covert Mission suggest he’s bang in form. His penultimate start yielded a second to Southwold and then he was third to a well-handicapped Athmad, who has won again and went within a head of bringing up the hat-trick. I don’t think there’s a rival on their level in here and if all could go to plan from a tactical perspective, career win number five could be en route for this fellow.
19:30 Newcastle – Abnaa – 1pt @ 33/1
Abnaa might be a bit all-or-nothing but I struggle to see why he’s 33/1+! Granted, his last two performances were not hectic but the first was a 0-90 at Southwell in which the pace held up, plus he was slow to stride. The second came over C&D and it was a similar scenario, position proving vital. His wasn’t great and although the response under pressure was non-existent, I’m inclined to forgive him.
It’s questionable whether he’ll get much of a gallop to sit off here but that’s more than factored into the price and it’s only four runs since he scored over C&D. He’s a pound higher but meets 6/1 shot Anif on the same terms and that rival was almost three-lengths behind him for the latest win. The stars may need to align to see a repeat trick but I can’t let him go unbacked at the current prices.
