14:40 Pontefract – Dunnington Lad – 1pt @ 25/1

Dunnington Lad is on the higher end of the risk scale as he’s from a small yard who haven’t got any flat winners (albeit not from many runners) and operate at a low strike-rate in the National Hunt code. On the other hand, he is handicapped to do something meaningful based on a couple of hints from this season and, more so, on what he achieved as a juvenile when trained by David Evans.

Whether he can get back to his peak, or close to it, I genuinely have no idea. But he wasn’t disgraced a few runs ago at Haydock when fifth behind a clearly well-handicapped Spirit Of Applause. His track position in the closing stages didn’t help but he wasn’t beaten far and the 6f trip isn’t his bag either, with the majority of what he has done on the track suggesting he’s a minimum distance performer.

He didn’t run too badly back at 5f around Catterick next time but got a bump early on and seemed to find things happening a bit quick. This track could be the happy medium for him, offering a stiffer test over 5f, and he’s now a full 8lbs lower than his promising Haydock effort so has no excuses with his mark. In his first 0-65 over 5f, he’s a sleeper in the field who could go well. Or bomb out. Who knows!

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

16:25 Pontefract – Tropez Power – 1pt @ 9/2

Tropez Power is more talented on the All-Weather surfaces but that’s reflected in his rating, as he’s 8lbs lower on turf. Regardless of what he’s running on top of, he’s a very strong traveller and he didn’t get much of a pace to sit off around York last time. The finishing speed of that race was 106.5%, showing those up top jogged around before quickening late, and he did well to come home in second.

The form has been boosted since with the winner going on to land the Carlisle Bell off 3lbs higher and I think they were much the best two horses that day, only circumstance dramatically favoured one over the other. Dropping back a furlong in trip won’t do Tropez Power any harm and a few of these have led in the past, so hopefully the pace will be strong enough. 9/2 looks like a very fair price to me.

18:45 Windsor – Lethal Nymph – 2pts @ 7/1

Lethal Nymph is one of those horses that shows off my ignorance as I’m backing him for the third time in a row despite his last two spins being well below what he was displaying beforehand. However, that has had a positive effect on his mark as he’s down 3lbs and Clive Cox reported that his work at home has stepped up a notch, which could help to get him back on track third time out for the season.

To see what he’s really capable of, you just have to look at last September’s two Ascot wins off 86 & 89. They marked him down as a potential contender for some big races and whilst things haven’t worked out for him yet, I reckon it won’t take much longer for him to regain that upward curve. Ideally that’ll happen today, as 7/1 underrates what he’s able to achieve when he’s on-song.
