14:25 Lingfield – Kodiac Sign – 1pt @ 20/1

Kodiac Sign has shot down the ratings since joining David Evans from Sir Michael Stoute’s yard and comes with plenty of risk attached, especially when you consider that his first four handicap starts led to him beating no horses home! He fared a bit better last time in managing to beat three but that run came over Wolverhampton’s extended mile in a first-time tongue-tie and I don’t think he stayed.

Coming down to the final furlong, he was close up with a bunch of the others fighting it out for third place and although he did weaken afterwards, I thought there was enough of a hint in place to suggest he’s worth another chance back at 7f. This is a decent contest for the grade so maybe his day will come in a lesser event, but he’s 18/1 or bigger with most firms and that’s pretty fair in my book.

15:00 Lingfield – Laheg – 1pt @ 9/2

We haven’t got to see Laheg since just before Christmas and have to hope that he’s in a similarly good level of form. He won that day, scoring quite comfortably at Wolverhampton, and after just eight career starts there’s no doubting that he should have more to offer in handicap company.

The way he can travel adds hope that he’ll rate higher and cope with going into a higher grade of handicap for the first time, and this is only the second time he has raced since being gelded in November. In terms of today’s contest, I don’t think there are that many with major scope for improvement and he has got the inside draw, which should ensure a nice position right behind the pace. If the splits come, and he’s not forced to go for the rail in the straight, I expect a big run off 84.

17:45 Newcastle – Pop Favorite – 1pt @ 14/1

I’m convinced there’s probably a few runners in here who are overpriced but finding the right one isn’t too easy! My pin has landed on Pop Favorite to do the business for Scott Dixon. His latest effort was poor but he was caught out at least three wide throughout and didn’t look like one who had done much work, dropping away before the longer trip could become an issue.

There’s hope for a revival, however, as blinkers go on for the first time in over a year and when he was trained by David Brown, he won a C&D handicap off 11lbs higher with blinkers reapplied. It’s only the second time he’ll be back here with his current yard, who don’t venture to Newcastle all that often. It’ll go well or badly but 14/1 – which could drift out further before long – is worth a small go in hope.

19:15 Newcastle – Gannon Glory – 1pt @ 6/1

Gannon Glory has only had eight starts and just two since joining Richard Fahey. Neither of those panned out ideally for him, the first over 5f at Southwell and then over this C&D. He was beaten little more than a length on each occasion and was never really trailing the right horses to pull him along.

Being drawn in the middle of the pack with two of the pace angles nearby could see today’s scenario be a more favourable one and I think he’s nicely treated off 71 if the stars align for him in a few other areas. The yard are in good order and with those two runs under his belt following a break, his fitness should be reaching a peak now. The juice in his price is gone but I’ll still have a shot at 6/1 as I can’t see how he won’t at least run another good race. He'll be winning something before too long.
