15:45 Thirsk – Enderman – 1pt @ 15/2
Enderman has a poor win record, just 1-24 overall, and can’t be trusted all that much. However, he performed close to his peak two runs ago when returning from a four-month break and may have bounced when disappointing a couple of weeks later. Paul Midgley has given him some time off since and if he could return to the level shown for that comeback, he’s likely to be a big player in this.
Switching over to turf won’t be a problem and I’m interested to see how he’ll do at 7f in this code. Most of his attempts last year were in sprints but his striding data would suggest he has the potential to do best at this trip (almost won over 7f at Newcastle last August). His sole win came on soft so the ground is going to be what he wants and if he finds a good rhythm (can be keen), I fancy he’ll go close.

17:15 Thirsk – Poster Child – 1pt @ 4/1
Poster Child hasn’t stood much racing in the last couple of years and has only had a few starts for Kevin Frost. Each of them have contained some sort of promise and two were on an artificial surface, which she handles but doesn’t seem to be as good on. This will be the first time she has had her favoured soft ground and although this is competitive for the grade, she may prove hard to beat.
Her sole turf outing for the yard came over C&D last May (on good ground) and she ran a cracker there, finishing second under today’s rider Sam James. Conceding first run to the winner cost her a chance of getting closer but these conditions will hopefully help her to get there on time. 4/1 isn’t a mind-blowing price and it might get bigger before long, but if she’s fit then she’ll be a big player.
17:45 Thirsk – Captain Corcoran – 1pt @ 12/1
Captain Corcoran has no great record when fresh so that’s a worry straight off the bat, but his record on soft ground reads 2 wins and 4 places from just 9 attempts. On any other surface he’s 1-23 and he may just grind these into submission if the sharpness is there. It could well be and when he has come back from a break before, it has been on much quicker ground or on the All-Weather.
He hasn’t been with this yard for long, only joining up after Eric Alston retired, and he ran reasonably on his stable debut before going backwards second time out, possibly being in need of a break. What gives me hope of him being ready today is the booking of Paul Mulrennan again as he was on board when the horse scored at Southwell in October. Hopefully a repeat trick is on the cards!
