15:17 Hamilton – Fantastic Fox – 1pt @ 3/1
On a tough day to find bets, I’ll side with Fantastic Fox to end an almost two-year wait for a third career win. He has never made up it to the level he looked capable of hitting as a three-year-old but was always performing to a point that yielded very little help from the handicapper, being stuck between marks of 100 & 97 for eight runs before a bit of leniency kicked in early this season.
He’s down five pounds for this season’s outings and was strong in the betting at Epsom before running a decent race, finishing a couple of lengths off Austrian Theory. Given that he had a difficult draw, he did well to get a prominent pitch but they went very slow and he just couldn’t quicken sufficiently on that track and ground. Regardless, it was more in line with what you’d be hoping to see from him.
Down another pound, with a three pound swing with the Johnston horse, I think he could be set to do better at this venue. He won his maiden over C&D and the fact that the ground is different to last time could help, as it was a shade on the quick side for him. Cheekpieces are in use for the first time and if the track, ground and headgear combination ekes out a minor improvement, he’ll be tough to beat.

16:17 Hamilton – Ramon Di Loria – 1pt @ 9/1
Ramon Di Loria doesn’t have that much room off his current rating but then again he is a five-year-old sprinter and it’s sometimes hard to figure out where the limit is with some of the speedsters as they age! A three-time winner since joining up with Ewan Whillans last season, he landed a nice touch for someone when backed from 16/1 into 8/1 late on at Carlisle (5f), getting up right on the post.
Both runs since have been decent, firstly over 5f at this track when finding it all happening too quickly and then over 6f at Chester, where he may have been racing on the slowest ground. I’m not entirely sure sprinting on that track is his bag either and would take more positives out of it than negatives. The test on offer today should be perfect if there’s a pace on and 9/1 about him winning is generous.
