16:55 Wolverhampton – Kath’s Toyboy – 1pt @ 12/1

Kath’s Toyboy has a poor record (2-33) but hasn’t been with Kevin Frost for long. He performed to a reasonable level on his stable debut last month and then stepped up a bit despite running over an inadequate 5f at Newcastle a couple of weeks ago. That was a strange race and he was wearing a hood and cheekpieces combination for the first time, but he finished strongly to grab third place.

Returning to 6f will be a big help and blinkers go on for the first time in a while, which should also prove to be a positive. His C&D run in November yielded a nose-second off 3lbs higher and a similar performance would make him hard to beat from a good draw in three. He often finds a way to get beaten but the price is too big – I’d have him around the 7/1 mark. Hopefully he can show why by running a big one.

17:30 Wolverhampton – Apache Star – 1pt @ 7/1

The way Apache Star races is always going to hinder his cause as he’s too quick for his own good, often wanting to go a stride faster than he’s being allowed. However, he has spent most of his time being ridden by apprentices and for all that having Billy Loughnane on board the last thrice is hardly a big negative, Daniel Muscutt could be the ticket to get the maximum out of him from a new career-low rating.

Dropping to 5f was expected to suit last time as he went off as the 3/1 favourite, but he was stuck over-racing on the outside of the field and never had a chance of showing his worth. I think there’s more chance of him finding a good rhythm over 6f and although he’s drawn wide here, stall ten is not a huge negative. If he gets on or near the lead and relaxes, I’m certain he’s in the right race to go close.

19:00 Wolverhampton – Evania – 1pt @ 9/4

Evania hasn’t got a clear run at her career thus far, only making it to the track on four occasions. She’s a five-year-old now so time isn’t on her side but she’s 3-4 and returned from a few months off to win her first handicap at Southwell last month. The second and fourth won since to enhance the form and it was impressive how she managed to see all of them off, ultimately scoring with some comfort.

Wolverhampton’s course is an unknown but her three wins have all been at different All-Weather tracks and I can’t see any reason why she won’t be fine here. Daniel Muscutt also takes over from an apprentice on this one as well and he should suit her perfectly. Nolton Cross will give her a lead and if she’s as good as I think, she’ll be able to pick him up in the straight. 9/4 is tight but I’ll play.
