17:55 Newbury – Burdett Road – 1pt @ 7/1
Burdett Road has been on my radar for a while and although that’s not always a positive thing, he should be winning handicaps at some point soon. Both efforts since winning his maiden at Lingfield have come in decent contests over a mile at Newmarket and I backed him in the first one when he was sixth behind Surely Not, sitting closer to a hot pace than proved to be ideal in the closing stages.
He was hampered and intimidated before weakening last time, but I also wonder whether the trip is stopping him from finding a fully comfortable rhythm for long enough. That theory will be tested now that he’s up to 1m 2f and if he relaxes well enough to see it out, there aren’t many of these on such an appealing mark. He’s definitely capable of more than 82 and hopefully he can show it on the track.

19:40 Ripon – Intrinsic Bond – 1pt @ 7/1
Intrinsic Bond tends to be a shade on the in-and-out side of things but when he’s on a going day, there’s no doubting he’s capable of winning races like this. Indeed, he almost scored over 5f here when last seen five weeks ago, only caught close home by Hyperfocus having led throughout. That came on a more testing surface but he acts well when it’s quick and the longer trip is no issue either.
Indeed, he won the Great St Wilfred over C&D on fast ground last August and Connor Beasley returns in the saddle for the first time since his big day in the sun. His form on board this fellow reads 1-2-4-5-1 and he knows exactly how to get the horse into a proper rhythm. They should be able to get a lead here as well, which would help his cause, and I think he’ll be bang in the mix if he’s on a going day.
