13:50 Newmarket – Adjuvant – 1pt @ 9/1
Adjuvant is yet to run on the Rowley track but won on the other last season and looks an interesting contender on his first start as a 4-year-old. His peak performances came in similarly valuable handicaps, one at York and the other at Haydock, and whilst you could be forgiven for looking through his form thinking “this one prefers fast ground”, he was an impressive novice winner on soft as a juvenile.
I reckon the conditions could bring out the best in him and he only got an ease once last season, that coming on his last start after a big effort on firm ground the time before. He was probably gone over the top and assuming Michael Bell has got him right for today, we should see his true worth again. A mark of 90 isn’t his ceiling, Billy Loughnane is booked and hopefully it’s all systems go.

15:00 Newmarket – Shaara – 1pt @ 25/1
Shaara is the Shadwell second string on jockey bookings and maybe that’s the way it’ll play out in the race as well, but she looks too big in the betting at 25/1. She was really progressive last term, winning a novice, a handicap and a Listed race in the space of a couple of months. Her final start of the year, in a Group 3 here, didn’t work out too well but I don’t think that represents her limit and is worth forgiving.
Physically, there’s scope for improvement from 3 to 4 and the fact that she’s kept in training despite already having winning black-type hints that the Gosden’s also think there is more to come. On achievements to date, she only has a few pounds to find with some of these and given how she can travel, and the possibility that softer ground may suit her better than most, I’ll take a punt at the prices.
