16:40 Newcastle – Freak Out – 1pt @ 15/2

Freak Out gained his third career win when scoring over C&D in October and hasn’t been able to match that effort since. The big hope today is that he’s back to a mark of 75 and on both occasions when he has dropped to it, he has won. Granted, he was only a pound higher over C&D last time and finished up being well-beaten into fourth place, but that was a 0-85 and the first two home are clearly ahead of their ratings.

He should be a lot more comfortable at this level and it’s not impossible that he could get a handy lead if the plan is to go forward. At worst, he’ll end up positioned near the speed and it doesn’t seem likely to be that intense, which would give him an advantage. Whether he’s in the form to made use of it remains to be seen but 15/2 is a fair price about a horse we know is good enough to score in a contest like this.

17:10 Newcastle – Gowanbuster – 1pt @ 9/1

Gowanbuster is all-or-nothing and what he does in the opening furlong or two dictates what’s going to happen him in the closing stages. That’s obviously applicable to all horses but him more so than most as he’s rapid quick and tends to overdo it. That was evidenced by how he performed over C&D last week, setting a really hard tempo that he wasn’t able to sustain when the taps were turned on in the last couple of furlongs.

That performance was a stark contrast to how he went over C&D at the beginning of last month, where his energy was better harnessed by the returning Graham Lee. He ended up in second, beaten less than a length and was over three-lengths clear of the third. A similar approach here could see a revival on the cards and whilst there are definitely a lot of ducks needed to line up in a row, his true chance of winning at this level is shorter than 9/1. I wouldn’t put him in much bigger than 5’s.

18:40 Newcastle – Bellagio Man – 1pt @ 8/1

Bellagio Man was one of my last time out selections when he ran over C&D and I was excited to see how he was going to perform over 5f at this venue. He had only tackled the trip for the first time when second to Lihou at Wolverhampton a couple of weeks previously but was unable to land a proper blow on a turning track, getting rolling too late in the piece.

There were similar issues last time, despite my hopes of the straight course helping to pull him into things in good time to strike, but those near the speed weren’t exactly stopping and it’s not impossible that he can do better over C&D when the right scenario presents. It could do so here, with a few speedy types in opposition, and I’ll give him one more chance to prove that the trip can bring out more improvement. I’m pretty sure it will someday and hopefully this is that day!
