14:50 Lingfield – Impeach – 2pts @ 7/2
Impeach is too consistent for his own good and rarely ends up reaching a point where he has much in hand of the assessors, but he’s rated 77 at present and that’s a mark he can definitely win off when things fall right. It didn’t really go to plan last time when he ran over C&D, the pace of the race not enhancing his chance, and a similar effort could be enough to make him very hard to beat in this.
He wasn’t a massively unlucky loser or anything, but he got shuffled back a tad early on and I suspect if he had the position of the horse who cut in front of him, he might have won. Billy Loughnane taking over in the saddle is an obvious positive and with Pablo Del Pueblo likely to put a good pace to the race, they should get the gallop they need. If the position attained is the right one, they’ll go close.

19:45 Newcastle – Jarvis – 1pt @ 40/1
I could be barking up the wrong tree in supporting Jarvis to win this but Paul Hanagan is always a positive booking for Ann Duffield (19-124; 15% strike-rate) and the horse won first time up last season when trained by Ger Lyons, so could appreciate having been off for the last seven months. He’s 10lbs lower in the weights following his three runs for this yard and is thrown-in on the peak of his efforts.
The question, of course, is whether he has lost his way completely and it is possible that he has based on those no-shows following his 27,000gns purchase. But they did come in two 0-80’s and a 0-90, so he will be a lot more comfortable in this 0-70 if he has found the spark again at home during his time off. Artificial surfaces aren’t a problem either and he’s one of few who can go forward. 33/1+ is worth a small go.
20:15 Newcastle – Ice Shadow – 1pt @ 11/1
Ice Shadow was one of my selections when he ran at Beverley last week and he was backed in from big prices, although didn’t perform as well as the money hinted he might. I thought it was a reasonable run for a long way, however, and maybe the testing ground in a race where they galloped hard throughout caused him to finish off tamely, for all that I expected he’d enjoy that scenario!
He now returns to the All-Weather, on which he has shown promise on a few occasions, and it’ll be interesting to see how he does over this stiff 7f. He did attempt it once before but raced handier than usual and was returning from six months off, so may have needed it (the track was riding slow, too). He’s in a 0-55 for the first time now and could well have a better chance than the odds suggest.
