15:30 Dundalk: Equus Victor - 0.5pts Win @ 18/1
Equus Victor hasn’t been seen since finishing well beaten on debut in March but I think he could be capable of an improved performance today and running better than his price suggests.
He was sent off second favourite for his debut at the Curragh over five furlongs on heavy ground but he seemed to get squeezed between rivals coming out of the stalls which put him on the back foot from the off. He always looked to be struggling on the very testing ground but kept plugging away to finish fifth.
That was a warm race with the winner going on to finish fourth at Royal Ascot and the second, third and fourth and now all rated 80+.
While I’m not quite certain about a mile for Equus Victor, I think it will be more suitable for him than the five furlongs and this surface will be much better for him than the heavy ground he raced on that day, with his half-sister having gained her only victory on the all weather.
Things clearly haven’t gone smoothly with Equus Victor for him to only be making his second start now and it could be that there are some smart horses among the newcomers in this field but I think the market is underestimating his chance a little and any 14/1 or bigger appeals.
