Stranger Things Betting Odds: Vecna And Eleven Favourites To Perish In Finale

Stranger Things is set to come to an end with a fifth and final season - and there's plenty of speculation on betting sites about whether a main character will be killed off in the finale.

Co-creator brothers Matt and Ross Duffer have been reluctant to bump off one of their main darlings in the first four series, but rumours are increasing that at least one huge character could meet their maker in the final eight episodes.

Netflix recently dropped a three-minute season five teaser trailer, which has attracted more than eight million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours.

In the new series, the heroes of Hawkins are united by the same goal - find and kill murderous psychic being Vecna.

But will this lead to some main character deaths?

Season 5 Agony

Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer has previously said it would be "depressing" for viewers if he and his sibling were to kill off a main character like Mike Wheeler, insisting the show is not Game of Thrones.

Speaking in 2022 on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he explained: "Just as a complete hypothetical, you kill Mike, it’s like, it’s depressing. We aren’t Game of Thrones.

"This is Hawkins, it’s not Westeros. The show becomes not Stranger Things anymore, because you do have to treat it realistically, right?"

Ahead of making season five, Ross and Matt are said to have studied several popular shows' endings, and they discovered "the best ones were very true to themselves".

This could mean Stranger Things bosses continue to avoid bumping off a lead character, and it's 6/4 on entertainment betting sites that the main stars survive the season.

Ross added: "The shows that are trying to be super clever - I think that’s where it can go wrong really quickly."

However, a main character death has been hinted at.

Stranger Things staff writer Paul Dichter admitted the co-creators considered whether each character might "live or die" when planning the final series.

He explained: "Everything was on the table when we first started. We had the names of every character on a whiteboard, and it was like anything is possible for any of these characters. They could live or die. They could end up together..."

Also in the official series description, it states: "The final battle is looming - and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone - the full party - standing together, one last time."

With a final battle on the horizon, it seems unlikely that every main character will make it through the series unscathed, and it's 4/6 that one is bumped off.

But who will perish?

Final Boss Vecna To Die?

Vecna is 7/4 favourite on betting apps to meet his maker.

It's clear from the trailer that the Hawkins heroes are going after the main antagonist - played brilliantly by Jamie Campbell Bower - to stop him taking over the world using alternate dimension the Upside Down.

It would be fitting for Vecna to die in the last episode in a final boss-style slaying, but will any of the teens depart during the mission?

Millie Bobby Brown has arguably been the biggest breakout star to come from Stranger Things.

She portrays Eleven - who has telepathic and psychokinetic abilities - in the series, but has the star foreseen her alter-ego's demise?

Speaking about her character in season five, Millie said: "She's in a warrior state.

"As for her mindset, all she is thinking about is protecting her friends. Her friends are her chosen family, so she will do whatever it takes to protect them and we’re going to see that."

Sadly for Eleven, doing "whatever it takes" might see her sacrifice herself.

Eleven is 2/1 second favourite to perish in season five, just in front of 5/2 shot Steve Harrington.

Following the new trailer's release, Stranger Things fans have grown increasingly suspicious about Steve's lifespan, after he only appeared in a couple of scenes in the teaser.

Viewers believe Steve might sacrifice himself in the new series, with some admitting it would be a logical ending to the character's time in the show, despite him being a fan favourite.

However, others believe Steve's lack of trailer action could be a double bluff by the Duffer brothers.

Some eagle-eyed fans also believe the latest trailer and the July teaser hint that Murray Bauman (11/4) will meet his maker this series, because he was only seen wearing one outfit in both trailers.

Of the outsiders, Lucas Sinclair (8/1) could die protecting Max Mayfield - who is 7/1 to meet her maker - and Lucas' sister Erica Sinclair is 10/1 to perish.

Stranger Things Season 6?

The upcoming Stranger Things fifth season has been widely billed as the last-ever series - but will it be?

Duffer brothers Matt and Ross have certainly marketed it like that on the promotional campaign, with Matt recently telling Variety: "We do every last remaining thing we wanted to do with the Demogorgons and Mind Flayer and Vecna and the Upside Down and Hawkins and these characters.

"This is a complete story. It’s done."

Matt also said they don't want to "increasingly expand what could become an insanely convoluted mythology" after season five.

However, anything is possible in the world of TV.

Matt has already confirmed there are "more Stranger Things stories to tell" and some are "in the works".

He added: "It’s a bit early at this point to talk about them, but we’re deeply involved in every one - it’s very important to us that anything with the Stranger Things name on it is of the highest quality and not repetitive.

"That it has a reason to exist and always blazes its own path. And also, it needs to basically just be ... awesome.

"Or we need to think it’s awesome. And there are a lot of what we think are awesome things in the pipeline."

There's expected to be a live-action Stranger Things spin-off and an animated spin-off, but could this give the co-creators an appetite to make a sixth series at some point?

It looks unlikely for now, at 2/5, but it's just 5/2 to happen at some point.

Stranger Things have happened, right?
