Odds on the Next Premier League Manager to Leave

Arsenal have made their worse start to a league campaign since 1981 as Mikel Arteta is in the midst of the toughest period yet in his short managerial career. The former Gunners midfielder is doing a stellar job in cup competitions, but his team are now way off the pace in the Premier League and look more likely to be relegated than qualify for the top four at this stage. However, the board may give him the benefit of the doubt for now in what is only his first full season in charge.

Having been the surprise over-performers of the 2019-20 season, Sheffield United seem to have lost some of that magic touch somewhere down the line. Blades boss Chris Wilder and his team are in a relegation fight this season despite flirting with Europa League qualification last term. Having brought them up to the Premier League, there’s every chance the club’s board believe he’s still the man to turn things around, but there's only so many defeats a team can suffer before accepting that a change is necessary.

Just when you think enough is enough, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer grabs the wheel of his proverbial vehicle and performs the most audacious U-turn. Yes, somehow, Ole is still at the wheel at Manchester United despite several stalls, countless near misses and the absolute car crash performance when losing 6-1 to Tottenham earlier this season. Bookmakers are loving the scenes at United because with every defeat punters lump on the value available on Solskjaer to be the next sacking, only for him to pull something out of the bag and save his own skin once again. Credit where it’s due though – United actually topped the average points tallies for games played behind closed doors before fans were permitted to attend Premier League games again.

Another newly promoted manager, Scott Parker’s inexperience in his first stint as a football manager could cost him in the end. An amazing away win at Leicester closely followed by a draw with Liverpool seems to have earned some respite for the 40-year-old, but if they continue to drop points in the majority of their games it’s only a matter of time before the Fulham board start to look at other options. Parker may be a club legend, but staying in the Premier League is lucrative business and if results don’t pick up, a more experienced manager will start to look all the more appealing to Parker’s employers.

Sean Dyche has done an amazing job at Burnley over the years but there is a growing sense that he has perhaps taken the Clarets as far as he possibly can. They’re once again one of the relegation candidates this term, although Dyche has proven time and again that he is very reliable in a dog-fight and few would bet against him losing another this season. That said, the 49-year-old may feel as though he’s reached the point of Groundhog Day at Turf Moor, so who could blame him if he jumped ship should a new challenge arise elsewhere?

Poor old Steve Bruce can’t catch a break at his hometown club Newcastle. It seems no matter what he does, the Geordie will never be accepted by the Newcastle fans because of his history with local rivals Sunderland. Ask most neutrals though and they’ll tell you Bruce is doing a decent job given the limited resources at his disposal. In fact, he’s pretty much on par with his predecessor Rafael Benitez, a glamourous appointment which appears to have spoiled the Magpies faithful, who for whatever reason feel entitled to a better option than Bruce. For now, they’re stuck with the former Man Utd defender, and the longer Bruce keeps the team comfortably above the relegation zone the longer his odds to be the next manager sacked will stretch.
