PointsBet is Revving Up to Go Live in Canada With Several Partnerships

As PointsBet Sportsbook is preparing its mobile sports betting app to be fully live this week in New York, the company also is gearing up to enter the Canadian sports-betting market.

PointsBet recently formed a partnership with the Trailer Park Boys, popular characters in a mockumentary series set in a fictional trailer park. The series features, among others, three characters known as Bubbles, Ricky and Julian.

Nic Sulsky, chief commercial officer of PointsBet Canada, said “nothing says Canadian more than the Trailer Park Boys.”

Under its arrangement with PointsBet, the Trailer Park Boys will appear in advertising campaigns and “special VIP-style” events.

David Rivers, vice president of marketing for PointsBet Canada, said the company is “committed to building a brand and identity that acknowledges the little intricacies that make us all proud to be Canadian.”

Last year, Canadian provinces were authorized to offer single-event sports betting. The launch of commercial online sports wagering was expected to occur in late 2021 but is now projected to begin this year.

PointsBet Will Become Sixth Online Bookmaker in New York

The PointsBet Mobile App went live Monday night in New York before being sidelined Tuesday morning for technical issues. The app is expected be live again this week.

When PointsBet is live again in New York, it will join five online bookmakers already accepting online wagers in the state.

The first four — Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and BetRivers — began operating on Jan. 8. In just over a week, these four generated more than $603 million in bets.

On Jan. 17, BetMGM became the fifth online bookmaker approved to operate in New York.

PointsBet Up and Running in Other U.S. States

PointsBet originated in Australia and is publicly traded on the Australian Securities Exchange.

The sportsbook is already making inroads into Canada ahead of its launch. It recently formed a partnership with Curling Canada and a separate deal with the national curling championship team.

It also reached an agreement with NHL Alumni Association to be the exclusive sports betting partner in Canada and in the United States.

In the U.S., PointsBet also operates in New Jersey, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, Michigan, West Virginia and Virginia.

With its U.S. headquarters in Denver, PointsBet is the official sports betting partner of NBC Sports, according to the company’s LinkedIn page. PointsBet has operations in Australia, the U.S., Canada and Ireland.
