College football bowl season is upon us, and most people that hear about the Frisco Bowl probably assume that it is held in San Francisco. Actually, locals that live in the Bay Area do not like the term and they don’t use it. There is always a Conference USA team in this bowl, and the University of Texas-San Antonio will bring a Conference USA Championship and a 12-1 record into the game.

SDSU head coach Brady Hoke has done an outstanding job emphasizing the team’s strengths and masking its weaknesses. The Aztecs are not a good passing team, and the QB situation has been unstable.

In spite of these weaknesses, bowl eligibility was a given, but they were not contenders for a spot in the college football playoff.

Jordan Brookshire started the Aztecs’ last game against Utah State, and he was relieved by Jalen Mayden after completing 11 of 23 passes for just 117 yards. Mayden played well, completing five of six passes for 50 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for 36 yards on four carries.

The 46-point collapse in the MWC Championship game was an outlier. Their defence has been solid behind Bednarik Award finalist and NFL prospect Cameron Thomas. They are also strong on special teams with kicker Matt Araiza, and they have run the ball well at times.

They have covered the spread once in their last six games, but a bowl win in this spot is not out of the question.

Head coach Jeff Traylor has done a great job at UTSA, and senior quarterback Frank Harris has been an outstanding field general. As a junior, Harris broke the school record for QB passing accuracy, completing 63.6% of his aerial attempts.

This team was 8-0 before they lost to the University of North Texas 45-23 as definitive 31-point favourites. They turned the tables when they beat a very good Western Kentucky squad in their season finale by a score of 49-41 as 11.5-point underdogs.

Motivation is the most important factor to consider when you are handicapping bowl games. We have touched upon the fact that the Aztecs may feel like they are settling for a minor bowl when they had more lofty ambitions.

Momentum

UTSA is coming off an exciting victory over a strong opponent as 3.5-point underdogs. They have to be feeling good about themselves coming into this contest, and Utah State will be trying to regroup after a crushing defeat. This will be the last college game for Frank Harris, so he will be supremely motivated.

Common Opponent

You can sometimes get some insight by comparing performances against a common opponent. Both of these teams played UNLV, and San Diego State beat them 28-20 in Vegas. UTSA bested the Rebels by a 24-17 score at UTSA in early October.

Avoid Parlays

Picking the winners of games is only one-half of the equation. You also have to bet wisely, and with this in mind, you should avoid side and total parlays. If you like a side and you have a strong opinion of the total, make two separate straight bets.

Yes, you get more bang for your buck if you hit a parlay, but you can be right on one bet and lose all the money that you put out. If you make two straight bets, you will only lose the vigorish if you are 1-1, and the savings add up over a large sample size.
