2023 Six Nations Betting Offers

Any top online bookmaker worth its salt will offer new players a welcome bonus which can be used by rugby fans for betting on Six Nations. The very best Six Nations betting sites will provide betting offers specific to the Six Nations championship. We've had a look at a few such offers.

Free Bets

On most of the top betting sites, rugby punters are typically offered two main free bet types: Matched Free Bets and Matched Deposits. With Matched Free Bets, bookies will match your real-money bet with an identical free bet up to a specified limit, so if you make a €20 bet using your own money you’ll receive a €20 free bet.

Matched Deposits aren’t strictly free bets, but these offers land you bonus money that you can use to make free bets. A common type of Matched Deposit is "100% up to €50", which would reward you with €50 in bonus money once you made a deposit of €50. These come with lower and upper limits as well as other terms and conditions.

Risk-Free Bets

Risk-Free Bets are similar to free bets, but these allow you to place a bet - within limits - that cannot lose. So if you were to wager €10 on England to win the Six Nations following the terms of a Risk-Free Bet offer and they don’t finish top, you’ll receive a €10 free bet back as compensation.

No-Deposit Free Bets are the closest thing to free money you’ll find when betting online. With these deals you just need to complete your registration at an online site to be rewarded with a Free Bet, No Deposit of your own money required.

Boosted Six Nations Betting Odds

Also referred to as Enhanced Prices, these bonus deals bring you boosted Six Nations odds on specific events. So if Scotland were 20/1 to win the 2023 Six Nations, bookies could boost their odds to 25/1 for players in the run-up to the start of the tournament. If you place a bet using your own cash on the event and it wins, then typically the money you win over the normal odds will be paid out in free bets.

Bet x Get X in Free Bets

Another variant of free bet, Bet X Get X in free bets are similar to matched free bets but come with varying values. If you place a minimum wager using your own cash, you’ll receive the free bets on offer. 888sport offers new customers €30 in free bets once they have deposited €10 into their account, as well as a €10 casino bonus. These deals will come with qualifying terms so do check them before depositing.

Expert Six Nations Betting Tips

The Six Nations is not easy to predict - over the last 10 years, there have been four different winners. Here we’ve outlined five different betting tips that can help you make money when betting on the competition.

Always do your research

England have won 13 Grand Slams, while other teams like Wales (12), France (10), Ireland (3), Scotland (3) and Italy (0) have fewer. Home and away form plays a vital role in determining if a country can complete a clean sweep of their opponents to claim a Grand Slam.

Twickenham Stadium is the venue for England’s home games (82,000 capacity), France play at the Stade de France (81,000), Wales at the Principality (74,000), Italy at the Stadio Olimpico (73,000), Scotland at Murrayfield (67,000) and Ireland at the Aviva (52,000).

Having the information is one thing, but using it wisely is another. Can Ireland use home advantage against champions France? Can Italy pull off a surprise scalp away from home? Or, will Wales be inspired by the return of head coach Warren Gatland. Pairing solid research with strong Six Nations Betting Odds is a great formula for success.

Check past form

The 2022 Six Nations saw France claim a Grand Slam, but Ireland were only one defeat behind. England finished third, with Scotland fourth, Wales fifth and Italy last.

In 2021, Wales topped the tree (without a Grand Slam), France came second, Ireland were third, and Scotland finished fourth in the standings. England finished fifth after dramatically losing to Scotland, and Wales before beating France.

The Six Nations in 2023 is shaping up to be another great tournament, but who will come out victorious? Ireland are the slight favourites ahead of France, but England will be in contention again this time under Steve Borthwick, while Wales are also in the running.

Fitness is key

The impact of fitness should never be understated. England have been heavily reliant on centre Manu Tuilagi over the last few years but his injury record has always been a concern.

Wales lock Alun Wyn Jones holds the record for most Wales caps (154) and has been the centrepiece of their scrum for years, but at 37 his captaincy has now gone to Justin Tipuric.

Scotland are a match for anyone on their day, but can Gregor Townsend get it right against the rest of the top teams after two back-to-back Calcutta Cup successes? The storylines are out there but how they will end is yet to be decided.

Remember the winners

France won in 2022, Wales in 2021 and England in 2020. The year before that - 2019 - was also a Welsh success. But Ireland have had three successes in the last nine years, a record bettered only by the Welsh. Can they do it again under Andy Farrell?

France are the reigning champions and will take some stopping this year. Captain Dupont is another year wiser, while another year’s experience will hugely benefit young fly-half Romain Ntamack too. They have plenty of experience in the pack in the shape of Uini Atonio, Paul Willemse and Anthony Jelonch too.

Ireland last won the tournament in 2018 but their squad is packed with winners. Johnny Sexton could still be in the fold at 37, and so too will Conor Murray, Peter O’Mahony and Cian Healy.

Look for speed

Fast players tend to stand out in the Six Nations and there aren’t many quicker than Marcus Smith. The Harlequins fly-half grabbed 71 points in the 2022 competition and should be central to England’s attack under Borthwick again this year.

James Lowe, Damian Penaud and Gabin Villiere will renew their race for the most tries, while Josh Adams, Dupont and even Jamie George bagged two tries last year - George from hooker.

Scotland’s Stuart Hogg is also blisteringly quick and likes a run, Jordan Larmour of Ireland is quick off the mark and France’s Teddy Thomas and Wales’ Louis Rees-Zammit are both lightning fast.

In-Play Betting on the Six Nations

In-Play betting at top live betting sites brings you one step closer to the action. It's also a great way to get value on your selections. Odds can vary greatly compared to pre-game prices as bookies respond to the action as it unfolds. For example, you may want to bet on a seemingly unlikely scenario - like a team making up a huge points deficit in the last part of a game to secure a result.

In 2019, Scotland overcame a huge points deficit to earn a famous draw at Twickenham in the final round of the Six Nations Championship. England led 31-0 after 31 minutes. The Scots' second-half comeback would have offered lengthy odds for anyone willing to take a punt on them to draw or 'not lose' the game after half an hour. Other in-play markets include First Try Scorer and First Team To Score.

Our Favourite Six Nations Betting Apps

Today, punters are more likely to bet using their phones than their computers. And come Six Nations time, getting your bets in on the go is always a winner.

Some sports betting brands go the extra mile and create betting apps for you to download and use during the tournament, find a few of our favorites below. Those who prefer not to clutter their phones can always access sites through a web browser.

Six Nations Betting Markets

As with any sport, rugby union and the Six Nations have some unique betting markets exclusive to the game.

What is the Six Nations?

The Six Nations Championship - known as the Guinness Six Nations for sponsorship reasons - was first established in 1883 as the Home Nations Championship. England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales were originally involved.

The tournament became the Five Nations in 1910 with the addition of France and was expanded to the Six Nations in 2000 with Italy joining the pack.

It is one of the biggest rugby union events fans can look forward to every year and is an essential part of the game’s calendar. Beginning on the first weekend in February and finishing in mid-March, there are five rounds of action that usually take place over a period of seven weeks.

Who Competes in the Six Nations?

England

England have axed Eddie Jones and replaced him with Steve Borthwick ahead of their 2023 campaign, having struggled in the autumn internationals. They last won the Six Nations in 2020, but finished 5th a year later and then 3rd in 2022. Borthwick needs to get off to a good start at home to Scotland this time around and will hope to navigate to victory in their third match against Wales in Cardiff. They are at home to France before finishing away to Ireland, but only die-hard Red Rose fans will expect Six Nations glory this year.

France

France are the second favourites just behind Ireland to win the 2023 Six Nations, despite winning a Grand Slam in 2022. The French are strong in all areas, with captain Dupont dictating play from scrum-half and Melvyn Jaminet kicking well from full-back. Coach Galthie can rely on a strong forward pack to punch up the pitch, before throwing it out to dangerous finishers such as Damian Penaud, Gabin Villiere and Gael Fickou. They will be hard to beat again this year, with their trip to Dublin to take on Ireland in Round 2 looking pivotal already.

Ireland

Ireland go into the 2023 Six Nations as outright favourites which will delight Irish rugby fans in a World Cup year. They haven’t won this tournament since 2018, when they swept all before them to secure their 14th title. This year Englishmen Andy Farrell will try to lead them to Six Nations success with the ever-reliable Johnny Sexton coming to the end of his stellar career. Their New Zealand influence continues through backs James Lowe and Jamison Gibson-Park (both born in NZ) who shone in 2022, with a narrow defeat to France putting paid to their hopes of Grand Slam glory.

Italy

Perennial underdogs Italy can be found as huge outsiders in Six Nations betting odds, hardly surprising given they have never come close to winning the competition before. They have finished bottom in the last seven editions of the tournament, but do take a scalp from time to time. In 2022, Italy stunned Wales 22-21 in Cardiff, but that was their first victory since 2015 when they triumphed 22-19 against Scotland at Murrayfield. Paolo Garbisi is a solid kicker but as a squad they just aren’t up to the standard of the rest of the field.

Scotland

Scotland have been Italy’s closest challengers for the wooden spoon since the Italians made it the Six Nations, but Gregor Townsend has turned them into a solid outfit since taking over in 2017. Stuart Hogg has twice won the Player of the Championship award, with Hamish Watson earning that gong too in 2021. Even so, Scotland’s highest finish under Townsend was third in the 2018 Six Nations when they overcame a battering from Wales to record victories over France, England and Italy. Aiming for that again in 2023 is probably about as good as it can get for them.

Wales

Winners in 2021 and 2019, Wales are again under the stewardship of Warren Gatland and will hope for an improved showing this year after finishing fifth in the 2022 Six Nations. A sole victory over Scotland was followed by home defeats to Georgia and Australia in the autumn internationals, forcing the Welsh to sack Wayne Pivac and turn to his predecessor Gatland again. He will hope to rely on some of the Lions the Kiwi selected for the British and Irish Lions in 2019, such as Dan Biggar, Josh Adams, Ken Owens and stalwart Alun Wyn-Jones. A transitional period may be coming for the Welsh though.

FAQ

Rugby union fans can bet on a huge range of different Six Nations betting markets, with outright and match betting available across a host of online bookies. Some Six Nations betting sites will also let you create your own bespoke bets.

Handicap betting - also referred to as spread betting - is when one team is given a hypothetical advantage or disadvantage in terms of points. This popular betting market is well-suited to matches where one team is the heavy favourite.

To place a bet on the Six Nations you will need to register for an account with an online sports betting site. Once registered you can survey the available betting markets for the competition and choose which type of bet you want to make.

To make a successful Six Nations Bet, you need to have an account at a sports betting site to make a wager on the Six Nations. This requires providing some personal details, verifying your account and usually depositing some of your own money to get started.

Six Nations betting is split between outright outcomes and match outcomes. Outright betting options include which team will win the tournament or which player will be named as the best player. Match betting offers a huge raft of bet types as well as in-play betting.

Betting on the Six Nations is much the same as betting on any other sport. You simply need to do your research and take a punt on a bet that you feel will come through. You’ll have more chances of success with shorter odds, but longer odds provide more lucrative returns.
