Mumtalakat And TRAIL Partner On Esports Investment

Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund has agreed to look for deals alongside a European private equity platform, putting a Gulf investor into the conversation around eSports.
Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, known as Mumtalakat, and TRAIL announced a cooperation agreement on November 2, 2026 to explore investment opportunities across sports, gaming and esports.
The announcement came on the sidelines of Gateway Gulf 2026, the Bahrain Economic Development Board's investment forum, held on November 1 and 2 at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay in Manama.
What the Agreement Covers
The partnership will identify and evaluate potential co-investment opportunities. It also sets up an exchange of sector expertise between the two sides and will explore ways to support the growth of selected businesses.
A second strand looks outward. Mumtalakat and TRAIL will explore ways to connect international sports and gaming businesses with Bahrain and the wider Gulf region, including commercial partnerships and expansion of those businesses' activities across the area.
No target companies, deal sizes or investment amounts were named. The announcement describes a framework for exploring opportunities, not a completed acquisition or fund commitment.
Building On The SLAM Partnership
The new agreement builds on an existing relationship. Earlier in 2026, Mumtalakat and TRAIL announced a strategic partnership at the Choose France summit, under which Mumtalakat became an investor in SLAM. TRAIL's SLAM platform is described as the first private equity fund dedicated to sport, luxury, arts and music.
That agreement was signed in the presence of Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Bahrain's Minister of Finance and National Economy and chairman of Mumtalakat, and Nicolas Forissier, France's Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness. As part of it, TRAIL agreed to open an office in Manama to act as its hub for the Gulf Cooperation Council region.
Mumtalakat is the sovereign wealth fund of the Kingdom of Bahrain. TRAIL is the investment platform behind SLAM, which focuses on the interconnected worlds of sport, luxury, arts and music. The November agreement widens that focus to take in gaming and esports directly.
Why Sport and Gaming Are Converging
The announcement frames the deal around the growing overlap between traditional sport and competitive gaming. Live experiences, digital content and online communities now sit together in one entertainment ecosystem, according to the release, and the two partners plan to combine their investment expertise and industry networks to find businesses with long-term growth potential.
For the esports industry, a sovereign fund with a Gulf base adds another potential source of capital for teams, tournament organisers and technology businesses. For the betting side of the sector, investment in organisers and data and media businesses tends to shape how many events are staged and how widely they are broadcast.
What to Watch
The next signal will be the first named co-investment or commercial partnership to come out of the agreement. Neither partner has published a timetable, a target fund size or a list of businesses under review, so the practical impact on the esports markets on betting sites will only become clear once a deal is announced.
