TikTok Bans Safer Gambling Podcaster's Account

TikTok Bans Safer Gambling Podcaster's Account

A gambling harm-prevention podcaster, whose work sits alongside broader efforts to promote safer online casinos and betting operators, says TikTok permanently banned his account for discussing lottery compliance, then reinstated it only after he complained publicly on LinkedIn, raising fresh questions about how the platform moderates gambling-related content.

Jim Curry, who hosts the Better Gaming Show and promotes responsible gambling, told CasinoBeats the ban followed a video about making gambling “more robust, safer and compliant.”

Podcaster Banned Then Reinstated

"I appealed it. It said, 'Your appeal has been rejected. This is a permanent ban. If you want to download all your data…' And that’s where I was like, 'Oh, I’ve lost it all,'" Curry said. "It’s not a massive account; it was never about whether it’s a massive account or not. It’s the principle of the thing."

Curry only regained access after posting about the ban on LinkedIn. "Last night I copped a permanent ban (even following an appeal) for discussing how to make gambling more robust, safer and compliant," he wrote. "Meanwhile, I see a waterfall of accounts and posts in my timeline featuring tipsters promising guaranteed wins, crypto casino ads with no age filter checks, and grifters/influencers selling systems to teenagers.

"If TikTok’s moderation policy can’t tell the difference between reform and harm, it’s clearly just protecting attention, engagement, and commercial gain." TikTok did not tell Curry why the account was reactivated, and did not respond to a request for comment from CasinoBeats.

Unlicensed Gambling Content Still Slips Through

TikTok’s own advertising policy states that gambling ads may not “promote unlicensed or illegal gambling services” and requires advertisers to complete a certification process proving they hold the relevant local licences before running gambling ads at all.

In practice, unlicensed operators including crypto casinos Stake and Rainbet continue to appear in organic content on the platform, including in markets such as the UK and US where they are blocked. Guides circulating online advise creators promoting gambling to avoid gambling-related keywords and use coded language to evade detection.

Wider Pressure Over Youth Safety

The episode adds to broader pressure on social platforms over gambling and youth safety. Meta recently called on TikTok and Google to adopt tougher measures to protect teenagers, as part of an $18 billion settlement it agreed with attorneys general across 48 U.S. states. "We want to ensure teens benefit from this new industry standard, but we cannot do it alone," Meta said. "These protections will only be truly effective if we work with our peers - TikTok and YouTube - to put the same measures in place."

Curry said inconsistent enforcement extends beyond TikTok. "I have to jump through hoops to advertise on Meta and Google, but they’re all getting advertising money and revenue from gambling companies," he said, though he stopped short of accusing any platform of deliberately allowing prohibited content through its systems. He said the Better Gaming Show, now back online, would welcome contact from anyone working to promote safer gambling.

Curry's case illustrates a wider tension platforms face: automated moderation systems built to catch gambling promotion can also catch harm-prevention content that uses the same vocabulary, with no clear appeals path for creators caught in that overlap.
