Cheltenham Gold Cup/Grand National Double Chasers 2025

The Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Aintree Grand National are horse racing's greatest races.

Owners and trainers of staying chasers dream of winning one, but winning both races in the same season seems like an unattainable aspiration.

Only one horse has managed the feat in the past, the legendary Golden Miller, who did it in 1934.

Many have tried, but all have failed since, and in 2025, there will be more horses ready to attempt to stamp their name in the history books.

Here we cast an eye over those in contention, and the latest odds available on betting sites.

Monty's Star

If betting apps are to be believed, then Monty's Star is the horse with the greatest chance of completing a Gold Cup/Grand National double.

Currently priced at 12/1 for the Cheltenham highlight, the Henry de Bromhead-trained eight-year-old also figures prominently in the Grand National odds at 25/1.

Runner up in the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase 12 months ago, he has a bit to find with this year's Gold Cup favourite, Galopin Des Champs, from their meeting at Leopardstown last time.

His trainer knows what it takes to win both races, and he looks like he has the stamina reserves to run a big race at Aintree.

Grangeclare West

Willie Mullins' Grangeclare West was once one of the most exciting young chasers in the sport.

He has suffered injury problems throughout his career, meaning he has only managed 10 starts. That leaves him lightly raced, and with some potential to improve despite being a nine-year-old.

Last time, he ran his best race for some time at Leopardstown, finding only Galopin Des Champs too good.

He is priced at 20/1 for the Gold Cup but also has the option of running in the Ryanair Chase.

The way he stayed on at Leopardstown showed he possesses plenty of stamina, making the 33/1 about him for the Grand National a tempting price.

L'Homme Presse

L'Homme Presse was fancied by some to run a big race in the Gold Cup, but his recent disappointing performance in the Ascot Chase has seen his odds drift to 33/1 with horse racing betting sites.

Venetia Williams' 10-year-old jumped terribly and was pulled up early in the race. That puts his Cheltenham chances in major doubt, but he does have a brilliant record at the track and he should be seen to much better effect at the festival.

He has always been a stout stayer and is usually a good jumper, particularly when running on a left-handed track. That makes the Grand National a fascinating challenge and it could be right up his street.

Despite this, he is considered to be a 50/1 outsider for Aintree, and there is no guarantee that he will line up in the big one.

Gentlemansgame

Trainer Mouse Morris has won both races once, but his chances of adding to that record with Gentlemansgame seem minimal.

The big grey was outclassed in last year's Cheltenham highlight, and he has once again struggled at the highest level this season.

A price of 66/1 is evidence of his mammoth task in the Gold Cup, and he can be backed at the same price for the Grand National.

Stamina is not guaranteed, but there have been many bigger shocks in the National.

More Contenders

Four other horses hold entries in both races, but their odds suggest that they have very little chance.

Hewick put in a game effort before falling in the 2023 Gold Cup, but his trainer, Shark Hanlon, has all but ruled out his stable star lining up at the festival.

Fellow Irish raider, The Real Whacker, was an impressive winner of the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase two years ago but is another that was outclassed in last year's Gold Cup.

He is priced at 66/1 for both races, a price that may prove generous, particularly for the Grand National in April.

Royale Pagaille is the second horse under the care of Venetia Williams to have entries in both races.

A talented individual at his best, he has been well beaten in three Gold Cups, and at a price of 100/1, a similar story is likely to unfold in 2025.

Gordon Elliott has just one horse entered in both races this year, that being Conflated.

Third in the Gold Cup two years ago, his career has been on a downward spiral since then.

He holds a raft of entries at Cheltenham, and we are more likely to see him run in some of the handicap races.

Priced at 100/1 for the Grand National, he has stamina to prove to be competitive over the marathon trip.
