17:30 Chelmsford – Astro Jakk – 1pt @ 13/2
Astro Jakk may prefer another furlong in an ideal world but he’s 16lbs lower in the ratings than his sole outing over C&D and that yielded a third placed finish to a very progressive filly back in September. None of his form since has matched that level, hence the collapse in the weights, but a few of his spins have been decent and he’s at a level he should be winning at before long.
Blinkers, in which he gained last winter’s success in, return having been off for his last three starts and although he was disappointing on his most recent start, maybe he didn’t take to the eye-shields. His two runs before that – including one here – were a lot more promising and if he could just break a bit quicker, I think he’ll have a big chance of taking advantage of the handicappers leniency. Even over a shorter trip.

18:00 Chelmsford – Magical Max – 1pt @ 11/1
Magical Max has not made it to the track all that often for a 6-year-old and only has a couple of juvenile wins to his name. But he clearly has no problem running well fresh and made a pleasing debut for Ivan Furtado over C&D six weeks ago, finishing second to the reopposing El Hombre under an inexperienced apprentice.
A first-time tongue-tie likely helped and now the cheekpieces he has worn on three occasions return. They might eke out another couple of pounds and he remains completely unexposed on the All-Weather, this being just his second start. A fully-fledged rider takes over in the saddle and if a good racing position can be found, he has more than enough ability to run better than the 11/1 quotes suggest.
