Next Middlesbrough Manager Odds: Gerrard Favourite To Be Boro Boss

Rob Edwards has decided to swap Middlesbrough for Wolves, and the race is on to find his replacement at the Riverside.

It was somewhat of a surprise to see him choose a relegation scrap over a promotion push, but it leaves an attractive opening for another manager to fill.

Steven Gerrard has emerged as favourite to be Middlesbrough's next manager on betting sites, but he faces a challenge from a talented group of contenders.

Whoever gets the job will be taking charge of a club that is very much in the hunt for promotion.

Boro sit second in the table, five points behind leaders Coventry after 15 games.

Here, we take a look at the main candidates and the latest next Middlesbrough manager odds.

Gerrard To Return At The Riverside?

Gerrard has been linked with plenty of jobs since his departure from Al-Ettifaq was confirmed in January, but Boro might be the most attractive offer right now.

It was thought that the Liverpool legend would return to Rangers last month, but he ultimately walked away from negotiations.

The former Aston Villa manager has unfinished business in England, and Middlesbrough could be the club to tempt him back into the dugout.

He is currently 5/2 favourite to take the hot seat at the Riverside.

O'Neil A Fan Favourite

Gary O'Neil would be a popular appointment with fans, and his odds suggest he has a strong chance of replacing Edwards.

O'Neil impressed during his spells in charge of Bournemouth and Wolves, before being sacked by the latter last December with the club in 19th place in the Premier League.

Having made over 100 appearances for Middlesbrough during his playing career, it would be no surprise to see him take the helm at the Riverside.

He is being linked to several other jobs, and is a short price in the next Norwich manager betting odds

He is as short as 3/1 on football betting sites to take over at Boro.

Viveash Has Chance To Impress

Adrian Viveash (4/1) has been handed the reins on an interim basis after Edwards' departure.

The veteran coach has been assistant manager at the club since June, and now has the chance to impress as the search for a new full-time boss continues.

Having coached at underage level with Chelsea and served as assistant to Mark Robins at Coventry, Viveash is an experienced coach and knows the squad inside out.

He may lack experience as a head coach, but he will have a chance to prove his credentials in the upcoming games.

Southgate Shortens In The Market

Former Boro boss Gareth Southgate is another name in the running to replace Edwards.

The former England manager was in charge at the Riverside between 2006 and 2009, and also won a League Cup and reached a UEFA Cup final as a player.

Southgate had stated he wanted time away from management after stepping down from his role with England, but he could be tempted to make a comeback at his old club.

He has recently been backed from 8/1 to 6/1 in the next Middlesbrough manager odds.

Rodgers A Wanted Man

He may have only left Celtic at the end of October, but Brendan Rodgers has been linked to nearly every vacant position that has arisen since.

The former Liverpool boss left the Scottish Champions under a cloud after falling out with the owners, and would likely welcome a return to England.

Rodgers may feel that he is above Championship level; however, he may wait for a Premier League club to come calling.

The Northern Irishman is 7/1 to be tempted to the Riverside.

Brendan Rodgers

Corberan To Make Championship Return?

Corberan has plenty of experience managing in the Championship.

Having led Huddersfield to the play-off final in his first season at the club, he also did an impressive job at West Brom before leaving for Valencia.

The Spaniard is currently struggling with the Spanish club, sitting just outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

He is likely to be tempted to return to England, particularly with a club the size of Middlesbrough.

The 42-year-old had been 2/1 favourite with most betting apps but has drifted to a price of 7/1.

Carlos Corberan

Mowbray A Safe Pair Of Hands

There are not many managers with Tony Mowbray's experience, and he would be a safe option for the Boro board.

The veteran coach, 8/1 in the betting, managed Boro for three years, from 2010 to 2013 and will still have some support from the fans.

Raphael Wicky (6/1) has earned great respect for his playing style and calm demeanour when in charge of Basel, Chicago Fire and Young Boys, and the Boro board are thought to be admirers of the 48-year-old.

Elsewhere, former manager Michael Carrick is 10/1 to return to the job he was sacked from in the summer.

The former Manchester United player did a decent job when in charge at the Riverside, leading them into the playoffs and to a League Cup semi-final during his tenure.

Outside the main candidates, former Middlesbrough striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is a 10/1 shot with Ladbrokes.

The Dutchman was a fan favourite during his time at the Riverside, scoring 22 goals in 58 appearances.

He has managerial experience from spells with Burton, QPR and Northampton, but it would be a big step up for him to take charge of a club with real promotion hopes.

Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy is the outsider in the betting at 12/1.
