Next Newport Manager Odds: David Hughes Odds On Favourite For Role

Newport County parted ways with head coach Nelson Jardim by mutual consent just days after confirming their survival in League Two, and betting sites are already offering odds on his permanent replacement.
Appointed in July 2024 on a one-year contract, Jardim left the club with the Exiles sitting 20th, with the interim coach Dafydd Williams taking over for the remainder of the season.
Chairman Huw Jenkins thanked Jardim for his dedication, acknowledging the difficulties he encountered, including a squad overhaul and being away from his family in Portugal.
With stability restored after the threat of relegation out of the EFL, the club must now turn to someone who can offer not only structure and calm, but a clear sense of direction.
Who could that be? Let’s look at some of the candidates.
Hughes A Strong Favourite
A surprise name has surged to the top of the betting market to be the next Newport County manager.
David Hughes is not a household name, but the Welshman has a strong CV when it comes to coaching.
Hughes is part of the Manchester United development set-up and has also coached at Aston Villa, Cardiff and Southampton.
The 53-year-old has been well supported in recent days and is the 1/3 favourite to take over at Rodney Parade.

Manager | Odds | Probability |
David Hughes | 1/3 | 75% |
Rhys Carr | 4/1 | 20% |
Michael Duff | 8/1 | 11.1% |
Garry Monk | 12/1 | 7.7% |
Joe Allen | 12/1 | 7.7% |
Luke Williams | 16/1 | 5.9% |
Jon Brady | 16/1 | 5.9% |

Rob Page | 16/1 | 5.9% |
Leam Richardson | 20/1 | 4.8% |
Rob Edwards | 25/1 | 3.8% |
Rhys Carr Could Get First Full-Time Role
Another Welshman in the running for the Newport job is Rhys Carr.
Similar in profile to Hughes, Carr has a reputation for being a talented coach, and has worked at Newport's Welsh rivals Swansea and Cardiff.
His only experience as a head coach came when he was put in temporary charge of Coventry after they sacked Mark Robins.
Carr was let go when Frank Lampard took over, and he is just 4/1 to lead The Exiles next season.
Duff Has Done Enough To Earn Another Shot
Michael Duff was appointed by Swansea when they were pushing towards the top end of the Championship, but failure to gain promotion, followed by further struggles at Huddersfield in League One, has seen his stock fall.
Before his move to Swansea, Duff had been just one game away from leading Barnsley back to the Championship and had earlier guided Cheltenham Town from League Two to League One on a limited budget.
Dropping down to a smaller League Two club probably isn’t on his agenda just yet, but if Newport could somehow persuade Duff, it would certainly be a major statement of intent.
He is currently 8/1 in the next Newport manager market.
Monk Can Make His Mark
Former Swansea City boss Garry Monk has been out of work since he left Cambridge United in November, with the U’s bottom of League One at the time.
Despite this, his coaching career perhaps deserves greater credit, as he was once seen as one of the brightest prospects in the EFL.
His previous experience managing at higher levels, his proven quality and his ability to work effectively with limited resources make him a strong candidate.
Monk is currently 12/1 with betting apps in the next Newport County market.
Allen Has Managerial Ambitions
Joe Allen has not retired yet, but he gave a glimpse of what his future might hold when he sat on Swansea City's bench recently.
The Wales midfielder was unavailable to play in their 3-0 Championship win over Blackburn Rovers in their first game since sacking head coach Luke Williams back in February. and was instead part of the Swans' coaching staff.
Allen is currently studying for his coaching badges, and interim boss Alan Sheehan was glad to have him by his side at the Swansea.com Stadium.
If he’s looking for his first full-time job in management, Newport could provide the ideal platform, and the former Liverpool man is 12/1 for the role.
Williams Waiting In The Wings
Luke Williams made a strong impression at Notts County, guiding them to promotion from the National League and setting the stage for a League Two play-off challenge before departing for Swansea City.
At the Swans, Williams managed a solid 14th-place finish last season, but this campaign proved more challenging.
With the team slipping to 17th, he was eventually dismissed and is now searching for a fresh start, something the Newport role could offer.
At 43, Williams is regarded as a young, ambitious coach within the Football League, a quality that could work in his favour and he is 16/1 with football betting sites.
Brady Leads Chasing Bunch
Jon Brady (16/1) did a fantastic job with Northampton, winning promotion to League One in 2022/23 and securing a respectable 14th-place finish the following year.
He stepped down as Northampton manager in December and is now awaiting his next coaching opportunity.
Former Wales boss Rob Page and ex Leeds United assistant Cameron Toshack are also 16/1.
Other names in the frame include Leam Richardson (20/1) and Rob Edwards (25/1).
