Open Championship Predictions:

The world’s finest golfers will descend upon Merseyside to battle for glory in the 151st Open Championship this week.

Betting sites make Rory McIlroy the favourite following his impressive victory at the Scottish Open last weekend.

He emerged victorious when this major was last held at Royal Liverpool, so it is easy to see why he heads the betting this week.

McIlroy will face stern competition from the ultra-consistent world No.1, Scottie Scheffler, along with elite players such as Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith and Brooks Koepka.

However, several long-shots have defied the odds to secure improbable victories at this tournament over the past 20 years.

They include Ben Curtis (500/1), Todd Hamilton (150/1), Stewart Cink (125/1), Louis Oosthuizen (200/1), Darren Clarke (150/1), Ernie Els (40/1), Zach Johnson (80/1) and 2019 winner Shane Lowry (80/1).

That inspired us to look further down the list and identify some intriguing outsiders that offer each-way value at The Open.

Rickie Fowler Worth A Look In The Open Championship Betting Odds

Fowler was the runner-up when The Open Championship was last held at Royal Liverpool back in 2014.

He was the only player in the field to complete each round in less than 70, carding a consistent 69-69-68-67, and he only finished two strokes behind McIlroy.

It was just one of many near misses for the 34-year-old American star, who finished T5 at the US Open last month.

Fowler was the leader after 18 and 36 holes, and the co-leader after 54 holes, but he ended up finishing 5 strokes behind Wyndham Clark, despite leading the field in birdies.

However, he did end a four-year drought by winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Michigan last month, which should boost his confidence.

He was far from his best at the Scottish Open, but Fowler often raises his game at major tournaments, with 12 top-10 finishes over the years.

Odds of 25/1 on Fowler at Unibet look appealing, as you will get a fifth of the odds on the top seven places if you go each-way.

His elite iron play and quality around the green will give him a chance of success, and he could secure his first major championship this weekend.

Betting Insights: Shane Lowry's Odds For A Second Open Championship Victory

It is now four years since Lowry finished six strokes clear of the chasing pack to win The Open at Royal Portrush.

He was unable to defend his crown the following year, as The Open was cancelled due to the pandemic, and he finished T12 at Royal St George’s in 2021.

Last year, Lowry ended up T21 at St. Andrew’s after finishing 9-under, so he has a solid record in this tournament.

He was also T9 when The Open was last held at Royal Liverpool back in 2014, and he is a lot more experienced now.

Lowry’s last victory came on English soil, as he won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in September last year, finishing one shot clear of McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

A return to Europe could benefit the Irish star, who is currently 29th in the world rankings after finishing inside the top-20 at all three majors so far this year.

He endured a tough run with the putter, but he is now rolling it in confidently once more after linking up with sports psychologist Bob Rotella.

Clarke defied the betting odds for Open Championship of 150/1 to win The Open in 2011 after enjoying a session with Rotella, and Lowry could follow suit at 35/1 with golf betting sites.

He was T12 at the Scottish Open last weekend, but he shot 64 and 65 on the Friday and Saturday, which augurs well.

The Open Championship's Hidden Gems: Min Woo Lee's Long Shot Potential

Back in 2006, Tiger Woods famously won The Open at Royal Liverpool without using his driver once.

Lee is one of the best in the business with the 2-iron, and that could serve him well when he takes on the world’s best players this week.

Min Woo Lee

The 24-year-old Australian was T5 at the US Open last month - his best performance in a major thus far - and he appears to be on an upward curve.

He has never won on the PGA Tour, but he has two European Tour victories, including the 2021 Scottish Open, so odds of 60/1 at Bet365 look well worth investigating.

Robert MacIntyre: The Long Shot Worth Betting on at Royal Liverpool

MacIntyre came within a whisker of winning the Scottish Open on home soil on Sunday.

He stormed into the clubhouse lead after shooting a final round of 64, but McIlroy birdied the last two holes to beat him by a single stroke.

That was unfortunate for the 26-year-old, but it certainly suggests he has an outside chance of success at Royal Liverpool.

The Open has been his best major. He has made three appearances in it, finishing T6 in 2019, T8 in 2021 and T34 last year.

MacIntyre, a two-time winner on the European Tour, is an 80/1 long-shot with betting apps, and that looks tempting.
